Bernie Bettencourt's goal with just a little over two minutes left to play in the second overtime lifted No. 8 Cal State Stanislaus as the Warriors defeated Cal State Monterey Bay, 2-1, on Friday.
Bettencourt scored on the open net goal via a nice cross from
Katelyn Nebesnick at 107:49 for Warriors' sudden victory. The Warriors extended their winning streak to eight and improved to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
"Katelny battled all game long and she got off a blistering cross. Bernie made a great run and finished a terrifc goal," head coach
Gabriel Bolton said.
The win is also Stanislaus's sixth straight over Cal State Monterey Bay as the Warriors improved to 19-2 in the series. The Warriors are just now one win away from tying the school record for consecutive wins. The 2005 team won nine straight en ruote to a 10-1-1 record.
Cal State Monterey Bay put on the pressure in the second half by scoring the equalizer in the 68th minute. Korie Soares scored the goal for the Otters, now 5-5, 3-5 in the CCAA.
Allie Dugan had given the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. Dugan scored her fourth goal of the year by flicking the ball over the goalkeeper. She had received a long pass from Nebesnick, who ended up with two assists on the day.
"Sometimes you just have to find a way to win and that's what we did today," added Bolton. "We have great leaders on the team and players that have been in these situations before."
Millie Brown was challenged on the day but once again came up with stellar saves to secure the win. She earned seven saves on Friday.
The Warriors, now 6-0 on the road, will go for their ninth straight win on Sunday at Cal State East Bay. The match is at 2 p.m.
