Box Score CARSON — For the Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team, the run for a second straight CCAA title ended abruptly on Friday in the semifinal match of the conference championship tournament.
Despite dominating the Tritons offensively, the Warriors came up just short of the repeat as UC San Diego won, 2-1, to eliminate Cal State Stanislaus from the tournament.
The Warriors, now 15-4 overall, will have to tune into the NCAA's selection show on Monday to find out if they will be heading back to the NCAA Championship tournament next week. No. 25 Cal State Stanislaus entered the week at No. 5 in the West Region (after being ranked No. 1 in the previous week). Only the top six teams in the region are invited to continue in the post-season.
Similar to last Sunday's showdown against Sonoma State, Cal State Stanislaus created many great scoring opportunities and out-shot UC San Diego, 21-10, in the match. A 7-2 first half shot-advantage yield no score by either team.
"I couldn't ask for anything more from this team today. They played as hard as they possibly could," head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. "We created plenty of chances. At the end of the day San Diego just finished their chances better."
The Tritons opened the scoring in the 52nd minute when Cassie Callahan headed in a score for a 1-0 UCSD lead.
But the Warriors didn't take long to answer back as two-time CCAA most valuable offensive player of the year
Karenee Demery scored at 61:46 to tie. Demery had collected a deflected ball to beat UCSD goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky for the equalizer.
However, with less than four minutes left to play in regulation Gabie Hernandez found a loose ball right in front of CSUS goalkeeper
Millie Brown to finish with a volley to give UCSD the 2-1 win.
The loss is just the Warriors' first in 10 matches this season away from Warrior Stadium. It is also the first time they've lost two straight in 2012. The Warriors were making their third consecutive CCAA Championship appearance, fourth overall.
In the other semifinal match on the day, Sonoma State handled Cal Poly Pomona, 4-2, to set up the championship match featuring the two divisional winners on Sunday. UC San Diego and Sonoma State square off for the CCAA title and the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Toro Stadium.
