Box Score TURLOCK — Cal State Stanislaus couldn't turn away a sharper-shooting opponent in the second half as the Warriors opened CCAA play with a narrow 70-65 loss to Humboldt State Friday night.
Three Warriors were in double-figures in scoring but that proved to be just short of a winning combination as they fell to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association before hosting Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night.
Nick Hodge had 13 points,
Clinton Tremelling scored 12 (with four three-pointers) and
Ray Mitchell knocked in 10 points but those three accounted for more than half of the team's offensive totals. As a team the Warriors shot 39.3 percent for the game (36.7 in the second half).
Take away field goals by Hodge, Tremelling and Mitchell, the rest of the Warriors shot 10-for-34.
Still, the Warriors led 35-33 at the half and was never out of the contest — thanks to a number of key three-pointers. Tremelling made four of those treys on eight attempts. Two of his three-pointers, sandwiched by a
Marcus Walters three-ball, turned a seven-point HSU lead into an one-point, 48-47, Warrior advantage at 12:32 to play in the second half.
But that was the last lead held by Stanislaus as a score by HSU's Austin Bryan seconds later gave the Jacks the lead for good.
Humboldt State (4-1, 1-1) built its lead back up to eight with 2:17 to play but the Warriors again rallied — this time behind
Sam Marcus's play. He drove to the hoop for a layup and made a couple of free throws to made it a 68-63 game.
Taylor Bell's bucket with 27 seconds left made it a 68-65 contest before Alec William sunk two free throws for the final count.
Williams finished with 21 points and seven rebounds with Cody Kale chipping in 13 to lead Humboldt State.
Marcus Walters led the Warriors with eight rebounds and Mitchell grabbed seven boards.
Cal Poly Pomona, the Warriors' foe on Saturday, beat the Warriors three times last season — twice on buzzer-beaters. The Broncos ended the Stanislaus season in an opening round game of the CCAA contest on a last second layup in Pomona.
