Warriors come up short as Broncos win with buzzer beater

2/28/2012 9:34:00 PM

Box Score POMONA — It wasn't a SportsCenter Top Play this time, but the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos win another game at the buzzer. This time the 69-67 final score ended Cal State Stanislaus' season.

Tyquan Brown made a layup as time expired to lift No. 2 seed Cal Poly Pomona over No. 7 Cal State Stanislaus in a first round game of the CCAA Championship Tournament. The Warriors play like a championship-calibur team the entire game but came up just short of advancing in the postseason for the first time in their second try in as many years.

But for 39 minutes and 43 seconds of the game, the Warriors were poised for victory. The Twin-Tower lineup experiment that didn't work too well during the regular season worked to perfection on Tuesday as Frank Monge and Reggie Jones dominated the paint in the first half.

Monge scored a season-best 14 points with 12 in the first half, going 6-for-6 including three dunks, to help the Warriors shoot 61 percent against the nation's top defensive team. Saving his best for the last game, Monge couldn't miss as he made all seven field goal attempts with a game-high eight rebounds.

Jones show why he's the likely CCAA Most Valuable Player of the Year winner with another dominating performance. He finished with 26 points on 10 of 13 shooting with two three-pointers. He also made four of five free throws.

Cal Poly Pomona stayed in the game with gifts at the free throw line as well as some three-pointers that kept the Broncos ahead 37-33 at the break. DeRonn Scott made a layup at the buzzer to end the first half.

Cal State Stanislaus led by seven with 13 minutes left to play in the second half until Pomona went on an 8-0 run to prevent the Warriors from pulling away.

A see-saw battle ensued, and with the score tied at 64-64 at 2:01, Jones nailed a trey to give Stanislaus a 67-64 lead. Scott, who led CPP with 20 points, immediately answered with his own triple to set up the final sequence of plays on the teams' final possessions.

Coming out of a timeout with 43 seconds left and the ball, the Warriors worked the clock and tried to get the ball inside to Jones. However the entry pass was intercepted by Mitchel Anderson, which allowed the Broncos to work inside. Matt Rosser found Brown under the basket for a layup as the buzzer sounded.

For Cal Poly Pomona, it was their second miracle in as many games in five days. Anderson made a half court game-winning buzzer beater that helped the Broncos beat Cal State Dominguez Hills in double overtime last Friday night. That play made ESPN's Top Plays at No. 1 the next day.

Warrior sophomore point guard Sam Marcus chipped in 11 points and Ronnie Sawyer had eight.

Cal State Stanislaus ended its 2011-12 campaign 16-11 overall. Cal Poly Pomona, 19-7, advances to play Humboldt State in a semifinal game Friday in La Jolla. All four first-round home teams won on Tuesday, with three of the games decided by three points or less.
