Box Score TURLOCK — Cal State Stanislaus made a huge comeback in the second half, but the resilient Warriors came up shy in the end as Cal Poly Pomona took a 65-56 win at Fitzpatrick Arena.
Ronnie Sawyer had 20 points -- 19 of them in the second half — and
Reggie Jones added 17 points but Cal State Stanislaus fell to 12-8 overall and 8-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Cal Poly Pomona extended its win-streak to four games to improve to 14-5 overall and 11-5 in the CCAA. The Broncos have also won eight straight against the Warriors since Feb. 15, 2008.
Pomona was led by Dwayne Fells with 15 points off the bench. DeRonn Scott scored 13 and Mitchel Anderson had 12.
Against the top rated defense in the CCAA, the Warriors were not able to fully recover from a dismal first half shooting from both the free throw line and the arch. Stanislaus trailed 34-14 at the break after going 3-for-12 at the line and 1 of 9 from the half circle.
Cal Poly Pomona entered the week with a 56.8 points allows per game resumé.
Cal State Stanislaus, the top free throw shooting team in the CCAA, ended up with a 56 percent free throw percentage (14-for-25) after a 11-for-13 effort from the foul line in the second half.
Trailing by 11 with 9:14 left to play, the Warriors used a 16-6 run to come all the way back to make it a one-point game with a pair of Jones free throws. Sawyer sparked the second half rally with his slashing to the hoop play as he had four "and-one" plays.
Unfortuately for Stanislaus, those two Jones free throws with 2:52 left to go were the Warriors last points of the game as Pomona closed out the game with an 8-0 run, including six free throws.
At the end of the weekend, the Warriors still found themselves in eighth place with a 2 1/2 game lead on ninth place Cal State East Bay. There are now four teams tie for first in the conference, all at 11-5, including Cal Poly Pomona.
