TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus softball team brought the hot bats on Wednesday as the Warriors swept Academy of Art in a non-conference doubleheader.
While there were many hitting stars on the day, one particular stood out in a small package as
Laura Ginns went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in to lead Stanislaus in game two with the 10-2 win.
The Warriors collected eight hits in game one behind another
Brittani Weatherford shutout to win 3-0. Cal State Stanislaus improved to 9-20 overall heading into this weekend's four-game home series against Cal State San Bernardino.
In the second game, a fluke thing happened during AAU's first at-bat. A line drive to left went off left-fielder
Rachel Borges's glove and hit her face. Ginns, who normally does not bat in the lineup as the flex, entered the game defensively for Borges.
Ginns, who stands at barely five-foot tall, capitalized on her at-bats, perhaps swinging the "magic stick" which is the name of her walk-up song. Ginns picked up her first hit of the season (she was 0-for-5 entering the game) in the second and later scored on a
Sarah Locarnini two-run single. Ginns then drove in two runs in the third with a single to center to help Stanislaus build a 7-1 lead.
The sophomore left-fielder wasn't done. Her single through the left side of the infield in the fifth plated
Lauren Liming as part of the game-ending three-run final at-bat for the Warriors.
Locarnini ended the game with a bases-clearing triple to right, but she's only credited for a two-run double since the 10th run scored putting the mercy rule into effect.
Locarnini ended up 3-for-3 as well, with four runs batted in, as part of the 12-hit parade by Cal State Stanislaus.
Kristan Burns and Liming each also had two hits. Freshman pitcher
Natalie Rendon went five innings for the short-game complete game. She gave up two unearned runs on four hits and struckout four without a walk.
In game one, Weatherford was once again sharp in the circle, tossing her second shutout in three starts. She allowed seven hits, struck out four and walked two.
Locarnini tripled in the first to center as AAU's centerfielder Ashley Lokey dove for a ball and let it go past her. Flora then pop-up to left but the left fielder lost it in the sun for a run-scoring double.
The Warriors scored twice in the fifth, a run by Liming on a failed run-down play and a RBI double by Flora that scored Weatherford.
Flora finished game one 3-for-3 and two RBI and Weatherford was 2-for-3.
Academy of Art (5-14) was led by Lokey who had four hits in the doubleheader including 3-for-4 in game one.
