Box Score 2 POMONA — After the Warriors won a rare 1-0 collegiate baseball game, Cal Poly Pomona returned the favor with a 7-2 win of its own for a CCAA doubleheader split on Sunday.
Rafael Vasquez and
Anthony Gotelli paired up for a two-hit shutout in game one before Cal State Stanislaus was held to four hits in the seven-inning nightcap.
The Warriors are now 21-16 overall and 14-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association heading into Monday's series finale. Cal Poly Pomona is 25-14 overall and 17-14 in the CCAA.
Vasquez continues to shine on the pitching mound as he gave up just two hits in 8 1/3 innings of work for the win. After retiring 11 straight, he issued an one-out walk in the ninth before being replaced by Gotelli, who needed just nine pitches to close out the game.
Following a two-out double in the Pomona fourth, Vasquez actually would have retired 15 consecutive batters if it weren't for an infield error with two outs in the fifth inning.
The fielding eror allowe the Pomona DH Humberto Tovaline to advance to third as the only Bronco to get past second on the day. Jenzen Torres doubled in the fourth to represent the only other Bronco in scoring position.
While not over powering -- he only had four strikeouts -- Vasquez improved to 5-2 on the season following today's outing.
Good thing for Vasquez's performance, because the Warriors managed just one run against Cal Poly Pomona's Geoff Broussard. He went the distance and gave up nine hits with seven strikeouts for his first loss of the season to drop to 9-1.
Cal State Stanislaus got its rally going in the fifth when
Joe Medeiros hit an one-out double to right-center.
Craig Beevers followed with a single through the right side, but Mederios was gunned down at the plate trying to score from second. After Beevers stole second and third, Arellano smacked a hit to left to give the Warriors the 1-0 lead.
In the nightcap, Pomona got on CSUS starter
Phil Quade early and chased him with a Chris Miller grand slam in the third during a five-run inning. The Broncos led 7-0 after a solo homer by Nicholas Cooksey in the fifth.
The Warriors put together a couple of hits to start the seventh with
Andrew Graves and
Andy Yingling eventually scoring to make it 7-2.
