Box Score 2 TURLOCK — In another day of much improved overall team effort, especially offensively, the Cal State Stanislaus softball team competed against the highly ranked Cal State Monterey Bay team before dropping a pair on Saturday.
No. 9 Cal State Monterey Bay used the long ball to beat the Warriors twice as the Otters improved to 33-9 overall and 18-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The wins help CSUMB keep pace with front-running Cal State Dominguez Hills, which split at Chico State on Saturday.
For the Warriors, the offensive turned out 18 hits and 12 runs on the day before falling to 15-34 overall and 6-20 in CCAA play.
Sarah Locarnini and
Jordan Flora each homered in the doubleheader but the Otters out-slugged the Warriors.
With Stanislaus leading 4-2 in the seventh inning, Monterey Bay senior Jamie Moon hit a grand slam to put the Otters ahead and eventually the come front behind win. That one hit erased the Warriors' effort in game one as Lorcarnin's two-run home run down the right-field line in the third gave Stanislaus a 2-1 lead.
The Warriors went up 3-1 in the fourth on a RBI single by Flora and took a 4-2 lead in the sixth on a single by
Brittani Weatherford that plated
Brittany Balanesi.
CSUMB, however, got three walks in the seventh and with one out, Moon slammed a 1-1 pitch deep to center to put the Otters ahead.
In the nightcap, teams combined for 28 hits with six doubles, a triple and three home runs. Cal State Monterey Bay used three four-run innings in the second, third and fourth innings to jump ahead.
The Warriors did put up a five spot in the third to make it 8-6 at the time. Balanesi drove in a run on a ground out, Weatherford plated two runs on a single to right and a Flora two-run bomb capped the scoring rally. Locarnini and
Kristan Burns both doubled in the inning to help chase CSUMB ace Cori Reinhardt.
Burns finished the nightcap with a 3-for-4, two RBI game to extend her hot streak. She's now 14 for her last 29 at bats in the last 10 games after starting the season 8-for-59.
Locarnini and Weatherford also each had three hits on Saturday.
For CSUMB, a Nicole Pires three-run home run in the third, a two-run double by Jackie Serna in the fourth and a three-run shot by Nina Villanueva in the seven caused most of the damage. Moon was 5-for-9 and Villanueva ended up 4-for-8 with five RBIs on the day.
