Road Warriors No More, for Now
The opponents' home courts weren't too kind to the Road Warriors last weekend as they dropped both games. Those outcomes ended the Warriors' five-game winning streak away from Fitzpatrick Arena. After this short homestand, the Warriors hit the road for two more trips in back-to-back weekends.
Hope For Better Home Court Advantage
Cal State Stanislaus is looking for its first conference win on home court this Friday after they lost the first five CCAA games. The Warriors are just 1-5 inside Fitzpatrick Arena with the only win a Nov. 14 non-conference victory over UC Merced. The average margin of defeat in those five home losses is 17.8 points.
Other People Stepping Up
For the first time since mid-December, other players not named Mitchell or Walters led the Warriors in scoring this last weekend.
Taylor Bell came off the bench for 12 points as the team high in Friday's loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Saturday night at Cal State L.A., the Warriors were led by
Nick Hodge's 16-point total. Eight different Warriors have now led the team in scoring in a game at some point this season.
Hodge Warming Up
Nick Hodge is starting to heat up as an added threat on the team. In the last five games, he's averaged 14.2 points (with four double-digit games) and 6.6 rebounds per game while hitting 31 of 54 shots (57.4 percent). In the previous seven games, he averaged 8.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
Held Down but Battled Back
The Warriors shot just 13.8 percent (4-for-29) in the first half last Friday after starting 1 for 11 en route to 11 points in the first half. However, Stanislaus battled back. The Warriors out-scored CSUDH 44-29 in the second half before losing by 10. They trailed by as many as 25 in the second half as by 18 as late as 5:00 left.
Walters Among the CCAA Leaders
Marcus Walters is among the conference leaders in six categories when counting just CCAA game stats. He's third in both 3-point field goal (50) and free throw (84) percentage. He ranks 10th in both field goals per game (4.7) and field goal percentage (51.1). His 1.8 3-pointers per game is eighth best. With 2.8 offensive rebounds per game, Walters is tied for second.
Keys to Victories Not Met
Remember those key factors to victories (see below)? Well, most of those things didn't happened in last week's losses. The Warriors were out-rebounded (in fact, by 20 against L.A.), out-shot (46.7 to 29.5 percent at CSUDH), and scored less than 60 points in both games.
Key Factors, Statistically Speaking
The keys to the Warriors' success in six victories this season came down to rebounding (6-1 when out-rebounding opponents), shooting 40 percent or better (6-3), out-shoot opponents (6-1), hold late leads (5-0 when leading with 5:00 to play) and score 71 points or more (5-0).
