Box Score TURLOCK — If this going to be Warrior basketball in 2013-14, Warrior fans are in for a treat. The exciting brand of basketball was evident inside Fitzpatrick Arena Saturday night as Cal State Stanislaus beat Chico State, 80-78, in overtime.
Marcus Bell scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds — both game highs — as he led Cal State Stanislaus to victory to improve to 2-0 in the early goings of the new season. Bell again came off the bench as the sixth man and dominated all over the floor.
The big man from Modesto scored 15 of his points in the first half and his highlight reel would include plays of many varieties. His play included dunks, drives to the basketball with a 360-spin move, reverse layups and of course dominant post-play. He can also make the free throws, too. He converted his first 7 of 9 tries from the charity stripe in the first half before ending up with 14 free throws (17 attempts).
But, like the rest of the Stanislaus team, Bell also took an offensive break in the second half with just three points
That's when Chico State made the move. After a
Sam Marcus finger roll short jumper 37 seconds into the second half, the Wildcats held the Warriors to a single point on a free throw until a Bell layup at 11:21. That stretch turned an 11-point Warrior lead into just an one-point game.
Then, Chico State use more three-pointers to pull ahead but finally a
Clinton Tremelling triple at 2:56 tied the score at 62-62 (the seventh even score on the night).
The Warriors would push ahead with a three-point lead in the final seconds of regulation play capped by a Bell free throw with 14 ticks to go. But, Amir Carraway nailed a trey with four seconds left to send the game into overtime.
In OT, Bell scored 10 of the team's 13 points for the win.
Shey Mataele's pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining was the final margin. Six of those Bell scores were also from the foul line.
Sam Marcus (11 points, 8 rebounds) and
Chris Read (11 points) also highlighted the Warriors' scoresheet. Mataele finished with 10 points as well.
Chico State (1-1) made 11 three-pointers on the night, five by Giordano Estrada who finished with 20 points. Sean Park had 24 points on 8 of 15 shooting with four three-pointers.
