No. 5 Warriors' season came to shocking end in overtime

Box Score TURLOCK — The Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team's tremendous season came to a sudden end on Saturday as Cal State San Bernardino shocked the Warriors in the second round of the NCAA Championship tournament.

The Coyotes scored with 2:16 left in the first overtime period to win 1-0 and advance to West Region championship contest next Friday at Western Washington in Bellingham, Wash. WWU defeated Seattle Pacific 2-0 on Saturday.

Melanie Aguayo scored her first goal on the season -- and the second of her career -- by collecting a loose ball that came from a long pass by Paige Kang from midfield. Stanislaus defender Karli Nestler tried to intercept the ball but collided with goalkeeper Chelsea Lewandowski, giving Aguyao an empty-net attempt.

The Warriors completed the program's best season 18-1-2 overall after capturing their second CCAA title in three years a week ago.

"It definitely was a great season. The best in our program history. We won a championship and have another abnner to put up on the wall," head coach Gabriel Bolto said. "We felt this was a good enough team to win a national championship, but they made one more play than we did. When you get to this point in the season, at the NCAA tournament, it's usually the team that makes the final plays that wins."

The Coyotes were definitely physical in their style of play but the Warriors stepped-up to the challenge and controlled possession in the entire match — something the Warriors have done all season. Stanislaus out-shot CSUSB 11-4 and out-played the Coyotes, but came up empty on its chances.

Cal State San Bernardino (12-6-4) was called on 17 fouls and two yellow cards in the match as opposed to the Warriors' six fouls and no cautions.

The Coyotes, though, limited five shots each to Karenee Demery and Katelyn Nebesnick. Keshia Lyons was the only other Warrior to get a shot attempt off.

"It was just good hard soccer. (CSUSB) played with a lot of energy and I give them a lot of credit and they deserve to advance to the next round," said Bolton.

Cal State San Bernardino played 110 minutes Thursday night before winning on penalty kicks against Cal Baptist. In eight overtime matches this season, the Coyotes are now 3-1-4 including the draw in the first round contest.

For the Warriors, they also saw the end of the career for the program's best player ever in Karenee Demery, who will soon be awarded her fourth All-American honor. She closes out her career with 75 goals, 30 assists and 180 points. This season she led NCAA Division II in points and was second in goals.

"The past four years have been amazing. This is definitely tough to swallow (to end the season today)," Demery said. "This program has been on the rise when I got here and it will continue to because of the coaching and the great players we still have in the program."
