11/23/2013 4:32:00 PM

Box Score TURLOCK — Marcus Bell was again nearly unstoppable and the Warriors opened 3-0 for the second time in three years as Cal State Stanislaus beat Holy Names, 69-48, Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Arena.

Cal State Stanislaus also opened the year 3-0 at home in Turlock for the first time since the begining of the 2000-01 season.

Bell, the reigning CCAA men's basketball player of the Week, was even better than his performance from last week in today's matinee match-up. He scored 29 points with 15 rebounds — both new season and Stanislaus career highs. He also had three blocked-shots.

The senior from Modesto had scored 28 points with 14 rebounds a week ago in the overtime victory over Chico State to earn the conference's weekly top player honors.

In three outings, Bell is averaging 26.3 points and 11.3 rebounds per game after his second consecutive double-double.

"The overall performance was good. I thought Marcus Bell played a tremendous game and Shey Mataele had a very good game with 9 assets," head coach Larry Reynolds said.

On this Saturday afternoon, Bell was 13 for 16 from the floor and scored 17 second-half points. Most of his second half points came when the Warriors' needed it hold-off a Holy Names comeback.

After a Bell free throw at 16:36 to match the Warriors' biggest lead of the game at 18 (45-27), the Hawks went on an 8-0 run to close the gap to 11. They would get as close as 50-43 at 10:26 to go on a Blake Watkins three-pointer.

After both teams go quiet for two-and-a-half minutes, Clinton Tremelling's own three-pointer at 7:54 picked up the Stanislaus offense as the Warriors built the lead back-up with a 14-0 run capped off by a ferocious Bell dunk at 3:34 to make it 64-43. Another Bell slam would give Stanislaus its biggest lead of the game at 67-44 with 2:36 ticks remaining.

The sharp-shooting Warriors again posted solid numbers. They made 30 of 58 tries for 51.7 percent despite making just four of 11 on the free throw line. The Warriors also rebounded their opponents for the third game, 38-28.

Rob Walters added eight points to the totals while Chris Read scored six with seven rebounds. Shey Mataele recorded nine assists.

""We couldve done a little better defensively,  but I liked the way we didn't turnover the ball. We kept our turnovers down, which we've been working on all week," Reynolds added.

Cal State Stanislaus only had eight turnovers in the game, with just three in the second half.

Holy Names (1-5), which shot just 36.2 percent, did make eight three-pointers and was led by Harold Perry, Jr., who had 12 points and seven rebounds. Watkins had three treys and finished with 11 points.

The Warrior men will play the next six of seven games on the road, starting with next Tuesday's contest at UC Merced. Their only home contests will be Dec. 20 against Pacifica College. Five of those road games are CCAA affairs.
