Warriors nail treys to win on homecoming night

2/15/2013 9:57:00 PM

Box Score TURLOCK — There were plenty of free T-shirts flying around Fitzpatrick Arena Friday night as the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors made 12 three-pointers to beat UC San Diego, 72-57, on homecoming night.

The Warriors (8-13, 5-12 CCAA) got a much-needed victory, and snapped a five-game skid, in front a very vocal Stanislaus student crowd.

Taylor Bell, Ray Mitchell and Marcellus Pullum each drained three triples to help the team. Bell finished with a team-best 16 points. Nick Hodge was again a force inside with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Cal Staet Stanislaus swept the season series over UC San Diego (9-11, 8-9 CCAA) for the third straight year.

The Warriors were charitable in giving away the free logo T-shirts provided by Crivelli's Shirts & More. As a corporate sponsorship promotion, each time a Warrior make a three-pointer, T-shirts were sent into the stands.

Cal State Stanislaus went 12-for-23 (52.2 percent) from behind the arch versus UCSD's 3-for-14 in the same category. The only other time the Warriors made more three's was in the 105-57 rout of UC Meced in game two of the season way back in November.

The long-range fireworks worked great to spark the already jazzed homecoming crowd, most of them on their feet the entire game.

Bell's trey at 8:25 gave the Warriors an 8-point lead, their biggest of the first half. With the score at 29-24, Pullum made a three-pointer to start the second half for another 8-point lead.

However, UCSD would charge back and used a 12-5 run to pull within one before taking a 40-39 lead minutes later on a Justin Brue layup at 12:28.

But, more Stanislaus three-pointers brought the Warriors back. Finally a Mitchell three-ball that followed a nice dribble drive by Zeke DeBlase gave the home team the momentum into the final minutes.

Some late free throws would extend the Stanislaus lead before the final count.

Deblase and Pullum each finished with 11 points. Brue had 18 points off the bench to lead UCSD.
