Warriors, Coyotes split in CCAA softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO — Brittani Weatherford and Kristan Burns homered as part of a 19-hit parade in game one as the Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State San Bernardino softball teams split a pair on Friday.

The Warriors put up 15 runs on 19 hits in the series opener for a 15-6 win in six innings. However, they dropped the night-cap, 10-1, in five innings. Cal State Stanislaus is now 7-7 overall and 2-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Before taking the circle for her start, Weatherford led off the game with a solo home run to left field to put the Warriors on top 1-0. Weatherford then took care of the Coyotes in the bottom of the first, and went back to work offensively. She drove in two runs on a double up the middle for a 3-0 lead.

CSUSB (5-9, 2-4 CCAA) even the score in the second and went ahead 4-3, but Stanislaus put up three more runs in the fourth. The Warriors then put the game away with a nine-run sixth for the mercy-rule win.

In the sixth, Burns belted a two-run shot, Brittney Rickles drove in a run, Weatherford singled in two Warriors and Amy Droege capped the rally with a two-run single to left.

Weatherford finished 3-for-4 with five runs batted in in the opener. Brianna Nicholson went 4-for-4, Cierrah Mullins was 3-for-4 and Burns finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Stanislaus charge.

Natalie Rendon picked up the win in relief by throwing the final two innings where she gave up just two hits.

In the nightcap, San Bernardino returned the favor with a big offensive game of its own. Monica Feguson homered and Jamie Leffingwell had two round-trippers for the Coyotes as they sored five runs in the third and four in the fourth to blow the game open for the 10-1 shorten-game.
