Strong pitching leads to sweep over Dominican

2/6/2013 4:30:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MORAGA — After the first inning of the doubleheader, the bats went quiet for the Warriors. But that turned out just fine for them as solid pitching performances by the staff resulted in a doubleheader sweep over Dominican on Wednesday.

Natalie Rendon and Randee Hindman combined for a one-hit shutout for a 2-0 nightcap win. That followed a 2-1 game one win for the Warriors behind the work of Brittani Weatherford and Hindman in the circle as the Warriors picked up two road wins.

Hindman, in her first outing of the year, provided the much-needed late-inning relief for Cal State Stanislaus (4-2 overall). The freshman hurler came in in the sixth inning of the opener and got a groundout to get the Warriors out of a bases loaded jam.

In the seventh, after the Penguins drew two walks and had runners on second and third with two outs, Hindman preserved the win by getting a fly-out to center for her first save.

In game two, Rendon tossed a no-hit gem in five innings of work before handing the game over to Hindman in the sixth. Dominican finally picked up a hit in the seventh inning off Hindman, but the Warriors had given themselves a 2-0 lead with runs in the top of the sixth, allowing Rendon to still earn the win.

Rendon and Dominican's Ashlyn Moriarity were locked in a low-offense affair until Lauren Liming drove in Cierrah Mullins on a fielder's choice. Kristan Burns, who had doubled in the inning, later scored on a wild pitch. The Warriors ended up with three hits in game two.

In the opener, Stanislaus scored twice in the first inning with Mullins singling in Weatherford who led off the game with a single up the middle. Sarah Locarnini had reached on a Dominican error and eventually came around to score on another Penguin error off the bat of Amy Droege.

Weatherford got the win in the circle in the first game after 5 2/3 innings of work. She gave up a run on five hits before turning the game over to Hindman in the sixth. Weatherford was also 2-for-3 and Kiley Mendez picked up two singles.

Dominican (2-4) was led by ori Johnson with two hits in the first game. Kayleigh Klingberg was the only Penguin to collect a safety in the nightcap.
