Warriors sweep Fresno Pacific with timely hitting, strong pitching

2/8/2013 8:14:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FRESNO — Timely hitting gave the Warriors' offense the runs and the strong pitching staff held the Sunbirds down as Cal State Stanislaus sweept a doubleheader at Fresno Pacific on Friday.

Skippy Ferreria went 3-for-5 and Colt McLaughlin had two doubles while driving in two scores to lead the Stanislaus offense. Ferreria also stole two bases on the day. Two strong starts by the pitching staff and two Danny Molieri saves resulted in two wins on the road against a highly regarded and previously undefeated FPU team.

Three other Warriors -- Clint Brill, Matt Chaidez and Craig Beevers -- each also collected two hits as the Warriors scattered 16 hits in the twinbill to improve to 3-2 overall.

Byron Lemon threw eight innings in the first game for the win. He gave up just two runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Other than two manufactured FPU runs in the fifth and eighth innings, Lemon was in control facing no more than four batters in six of the eight innings.

Molieri shut the doors on the Sunbirds in the ninth with two strikeouts for his first save of the day.

On offense, Andrew Graves drove in two runs with a two-out single in the sixth to break up a 1-1 tie.

In the nightcap, the Warriors got out on top in the first after a McLaughlin two-run double down the left-field line. A Chaidez double in the second scored another run for a 3-0 CSUS lead.

The Warriors scored twice in the sixth with two outs for a 5-2 lead before the Sunbirds scored twice in the eighth to close in. A FPU two-run double made it 5-4 before head coach Kenny Leonesio asked Molieri to get four outs for another safe. Molieri immediately got a flyout to end the FPU threat and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts for another save.

As a team Fresno Pacific (3-2) batted just .148 in 18 innings against the Warriors. Kyle Coppom and Bobby Mendoza each had two hits on the day.

The teams will play two more in Turlock on Saturday with first pitch at 11 a.m.
