TURLOCK — A young Cal State Stanislaus team was up to the challenge as usual on Friday against No. 14 ranked Cal State L.A., but in the end, the Golden Eagles left Turlock with a 7-2 win.
Davina Meza beat Christie Lau, 7-5, 6-3, in singles play to highlight the afternoon. Lau entered the match ranked No. 23 individually in the nation in the most recent ITA rankings.
Meza's win was her fifth in dual play this spring. She's 10-6 overall including tournament play. Meza and teammate
McKenzy Harden also won at No. 1 doubles as they improved to 5-2 in dual play with their third consecutive victory.
Harden and Meza defeated Lau and her partner Leora Hemmerich, 8-6, earlier in the afternoon.
"I am proud (of these girls). (They) battled against a very good nationally ranked team," head coach
Verek Visaraga said. "It could have very easily be 6-3 or 5-4."
The afternoon also started with two very tightly contested doubles competition. However, the Warriors' No. 2 and No. 3 teams fell shy in 8-6 and 8-5 sets.
Cal State Stanislaus will be at home again on Saturday in a scrimmage against Sierra College before hosting Fresno Pacific on Monday.
