Box Score 2 TURLOCK — Warrior Nation. Her name is
Ghianna Falconi — and you can call her "G." Getting her first opportunity to play, the freshman from Oakdale sparked the Cal State Stanislaus offense in the series finale as the Warriors split another twinbill against San Francisco State.
After dropping a tight 2-1 game to start the day on Saturday, the Warriors rebounded, with changes in their lineup, for a 7-6 game two win to split the doubleheader and the series.
Falconi hit safely in her first three at-bats of her collegiate career -- including a run-scoring triple -- and scored three times to jump-start the Warrior offense. All three of her hits came with two strikes with the first a single through the left-side in the first inning. Falconi and
Sarah Locarnini, who batted leadoff, both scored in the inning.
In the third, Falconi led off the frame with a solid single to center, stole second and raced all the around to score when the throw from the SF State catcher bounced out to centerfield.
In the Stanislaus (8-9, 4-8 CCAA) fifth, when the Warriors scored three times to go ahead 6-5, Falconi was again in the middle of the rally. After Locarnini led off with a single up the middle, Falconi, with two strikes, drilled a shot to left-center field for a triple.
That hit may have inspired the rest of the team as the Warriors continued the inning with two more runs including a bases loaded walk that broke the 5-5 tie.
SF State did tie the game at 6-6 in the seventh to set up a dramatic seventh for Cal State Stanislaus.
With two outs and runners at first and second (
Lauren Liming walked and moved to second on a wild pitch and
Brianna Nicholson was hit by a pitch), coach
Jan Schefkowitz called up
Cierrah Mullins for a pinch hit.
After missing the starting lineup after struggling in the series, Mullins capitalized on the opportunity and softly dropped a single in front of the Gator left-fielder to score Liming asthe winner.
Falconi finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI. Her fourth at bat resulted in a hard liner that was headed to left field, but SFSU's shortstop Jennifer Lewis cheated over to her right and reached to get the out.
Liming went 2-for-3 while
Brittani Weatherford drove in two runs to contribute in game two.
Brittney Rickles had a hit in each game and Nicholson had three hits in the twinbill including collecting two of the team's four hits in the first game.
San Francisco State (9-11, 4-8 CCAA) scored twice in the sixth inning of the first game for the 2-1 win. Lacy Fernandez hit solo home runs in each game.
