Box Score 2 TURLOCK — Sonoma State pitchers struck out a total of 23 Cal State Stanislaus Warriors as the 16th ranked Seawolves won twice on Friday by the same score of 3-0.
The Warriors stayed closed against the highly ranked team featuring All-American Samantha Lipperd as the Seawolves' pitching ace before falling for the sixth straight time. Cal State Stanislaus is now 11-19, 6-16 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
Cal State Stanislaus' offensive woes erased some quality pitching performances by starters
Brittani Weatherford and
Natalie Rendon. However, SSU's Lipperd and Amanda Llerena out-dueled the Stanislaus pair in two complete-game shutouts.
Lipperd, who amassed 396 strikeouts in 2012, fanned 11 Warriors in game one on Friday. She allowed four hits but also walked three.
The Warriors definitely had their moments on Friday. A leadoff single in the first was wasted as Weatherford was stranded at second base. A two-out triple by
Sarah Locarnini in the third was voided with an infield pop-up to end the inning. In the fourth, flex runner
Mia Ramirez was gunned down at the plate after trying to advance from second after a failed pickoff attempt.
Then, the Warriors left two runners on base in the final inning to come up empty.
Sonoma State, which improved to 23-8 after the twinbill, scored single runs in the fourth through sixth innings in the opener. In the nightcap, Holli Brown's solo homer in the sixth was the first run after Rendon and Llerena matched zeros for the first five innings.
Llerena finished the game with 12 strikeouts and a walk after allowing five hits in seven innings.
Stanislaus used three pitchers in game two with Mendez getting tagged with the loss by allowing the homerun.
Weatherford, Locarnini and
Brianna Nicholson each had a hit in each game of the doubleheader. Weatherford extended her hitting streak to six games.
Vanessa Currie was Sonoma's top hitter, going 3-for-7 with two doubles and drove in two runs. Ali Palermo also homered in game one.
