Box Score 2 TURLOCK — Two crooked number innings put up by Chico State turned out to be the differences in the California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader on Friday at Warrior Softball Field.
In the end, behind the bat of freshman Desiree Gonzalez, Chico State takes a pair from Cal State Stanislaus with 6-5 and 10-6 wins. The Wildcats improved to 11-8 overall and 9-5 in the CCAA.
Gonzalez came up with the big hits in both games and finished the day 5-for-7 with two doubles, a triple and drove in seven runs.
Chico State used a four-run seventh in the opener to erase a 5-2 Stanislaus lead. Then in game two, a five-run fourth turned the tide against the Warriors as the 'Cats went on to the twinbill sweep.
The day started with Warriors' offense finally came back alive as they used two doubles in the first inning for a 2-0 lead.
Lauren Liming keyed that frame with a two-run double.
Kristan Burns then drove in a run in the third to make it 3-0 before three hits, a walk and a hit batsmen led to two more Stanislaus scores in the fourth for a 5-0 lead.
But, Chico State scored six unanswered runs starting with two in the fifth. In the Wildcats seventh, they worked the bases loaded with one out, but
Randee Hindman managed to get a fouled out for the second out. However, Gonzalez took a 1-0 change-up deep to right-center field to clear the bases.
Brianna Nicholson led the Warriors with two of the team's eight hits including a double. Liming and
Sarah Locarnini both also doubled in the game.
In game two, the Warriors scored four runs in the third to turned a 2-0 Chico lead into a 4-2 advantage. That rally was again highlighted by Liming, who doubled to left to score two runs after
Cierrah Mullins drove in Locarnini earlier in the inning.
Amy Droege capped the rally with a run scoring single as well.
However, the Wildcats again used a big inning to regain momentum. Chico State scored five times in the fourth to make it 7-4 and tagged on three more in the fifth. A two-run single by Emily McEnaney and a RBI triple by Gonzalez powered the Wildcats fourth inning. In the fifth, Gonzalez again cleared the bases with a three-run double.
Locarnini and Mullins each had two hits in the nightcap with Liming driving in two runs to lead the Warriors (9-13, 4-10 CCAA). Liming ended up with four runs batted in in the doubleheader.
Hindman was tagged for the loss in game one in relief and starter
Natalie Rendon picked up the loss in the second game.
