Warriors sweep Chico State, pick up series split

3/9/2013 5:51:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TURLOCK — Cierrah Mullins' walk-off home run in the first game set the mood for the rest of the afternoon as the Cal State Stanislaus softball team beat Chico State twice on Saturday to earn the series split.

Mullins' fourth homerun of the season gave the Warriors a 2-1 win in the opener. Then it was Stanislaus' turn to use a six-run inning to blow open the nightcap for a 10-5 victory. With the sweep on Saturday, the Warriors bounced right back after dropping two on Friday to improve to 11-13 overall and 6-10 in the CCAA.

Desiree Gonzalez went 0-for-7 on the day as Chico State dropped to 11-10 and 9-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Cal State Stanislaus pitchers made major improvements on Saturday and kept the game close. Staff ace Brittani Weatherford went the distance in game one and gave up just one unearned run on seven hits for the win.

Weatherford escaped bases loaded jams in the first and allowed just one unearned run. But the big moment came in the Chico seventh, with the game tied at 1-1, when the Wildcats threatened. A leadoff single and a bunt by the bottom of the order flipped the lineup over to the top. Kelli Keefe singled and Alli Cook walked to load the bases with just one out.

Weatherford got Emily McEnaney, the No. 3 batter (and ended up with a 6-for-8 day), out on strikes to face Gonzalez, who had dominated Stanislaus pitching on Friday with seven RBIs. Weatherford got Gonzalez to fly out to left on a 1-1 pitch to escape the inning.

Then, Mullins sent the first pitch she saw from Alex Molina deep to left for the dramatic walk-off win.

In the nightcap, Stanislaus turned a 3-1 Chico lead in the fifth into a 7-3 advantage with a six-run inning as the Warriors sent 11 batters to the plate. All six runs scored were unearned by Chico starter Cheyenne Sandoval due to two infield errors.

Two runs scored off the bat of Mullins, whose grounder went through the legs of the Wildcat shortstop to score two runs. Kristan Burns and Brianna Nicholson each singled in runs and pinch hitter Courtney Sartin capped the rally with her first collegiate RBI single.

Mullins also tripled in the sixth inning that followed a Sarah Locarnini double to highlight a three-run Stanislaus rally.

Locarnini had a hit in each game and also walked three times in the twinbill to extend her on-base streak to 20 games. Mullins and Nicholson each had three hits on Saturday.

Randee Hindman, who pitched to one batter in the fifth to kill another Chico rally was credited with the win in game two. Weatherford returned to the circle and pitched the final two innings to close out the series.
