Big innings, unearned runs resulted in two UCSD wins

4/12/2013 5:54:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TURLOCK — Unable to escape the big innings while allowing unearned runs, the Cal State Stanislaus softball team fell in the hands — and bats — of UC San Diego as the Tritons took a pair of CCAA games on Friday.

UC San Diego won both games via the mercy rule with 11-1 and 11-3 scores in five innings to improve to 26-16 overall and 19-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Tritons remain near the top of the conference standings in second place.

For the Warriors, a seven-run fourth in game one by UCSD blew the game open. Then in the nightcap, after a 2-2 score through three innings, the Tritons plated five runs in the fourth and crossed home four times in the fifth to put the contest away.

In both games, it was the big innings with unearned runs that caused trouble for the Warriors.

Cal State Stanislaus (13-29, 6-20 CCAA) was unable to get out of the fourth inning of game one. After two quick outs, a double and a walk set-up the play that keyed the rest of the inning. A high fly ball to right-center was not caught by the Stanislaus outfielders that snow-balled into a seven-run inning. The Warriors would make another fielding error in the inning as all seven runs were unearned.

In the end, of the 11 runs scored in the opener, eight runs were unearned by starter Brittani Weatherford.

UC San Diego capitalized on the Stanislaus mistakes and pounded out 13 hits with Taylor Sepulveda going 3-for-3 in the game.

In the nightcap, UCSD scattered 12 more hits with four of the 11 runs unearned with all four runs in the fifth were resulted from a fielding error that would have gotten the Warriors out of the inning.

Caitlin Brown had two hits in each game and drove in five runs in the doubleheader. Emily McQuaid went 3-for-3 in the nightcap.

Amy Droege led the Warriors with two hits in the first game while Courtney Sartin drove in a run in game two. Kristan Burns, who also pitched in both games, drove in a run in each contest.

Both teams will meet again on Saturday at 11 a.m. as Cal State Stanislaus celebrates the 40th anniversary of the passage of Title IX with in-between game festivities. Former Warrior student-athletes and coaches are expected to be on hand for the celebration.
