OAKLAND – Cal State Stanislaus got a little bit of everything Sunday in a doubleheader split against Acadamy of Art.
Rafael Vasquez threw a complete game shutout in game one and the Warriors offense backed him up for a 9-0 win. Then after having the go-ahead run thrown out at the plate in the top half of the ninth, the Warriors saw the Urban Knights walk off with a 6-5 win in the nightcap.
The Warriors (10-32) grabbed their first series win of the year, winning the three-game, non-conference series against Academy of Art 2-1.
GAME ONE
Vasquez (2-6) threw his fifth quality start of the season in shutting out the Urban Knights (6-36) over nine innings. He struck out three and scattered seven hits while walking no more than one batter for the fifth time.
Skippy Ferreria continued his recent tear, going 5 for 6 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI to lead a Warriors offense that notched double-digit hits for the fourth time in six games. Six of the Warriors' 13 hits went for extra bases.
Ferreria entered the game having gone 7 for his last 13 and extended his hitting streak to four games with a single in the first inning. His first double of the game pushed across the Warriors' first run and gave them a 1-0 advantage in the second.
Cal State Stanislaus would add to that lead in the third when James Heller, who fouled out to first with the bases loaded in the first inning, drove in Clint Brill with an RBI double.
The Warriors belted two triples in the fourth inning, the first a leadoff three-bagger by Matt Chaidez, who would later score on a sacrifice fly, and the second, a two-RBI triple by Ross Gonsalves to make it 5-0.
Staked to an early lead, Vasquez would retire 10 of the 11 batters he faced in the fourth through seventh innings. He ran into trouble in the eighth with two leadoff singles, but would induce one of the Warriors' three double plays in the game to get out of the jam and keep Academy of Art off the scoreboard.
Craig Beevers also had multiple hits, going 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Klayton Miller scored twice and drove in a run.
GAME TWO
The back-and-forth nature of the nightcap came to a head in the ninth inning with the game tied 5-5.
Chaidez put himself in scoring position with a one-out single to left and some heads-up baserunning during an error on the same play when the left fielder bobbled the ball. He then stole third base, giving the Warriors the go-ahead run on third base with one out.
The next batter, Justin Charles, worked the count full before grounding to the pitcher. Chaidez took off for home, but was thrown out at the plate. Ferreria would fly out to end the inning, setting up the Urban Knights' chance.
Academy of Art's Lyle Brackenridge also made it to second with one out, stroking a one-out single and moving to second on a balk by Warriors pitcher Danny Molieri (2-2).
But the Urban Knights would get the clutch hit that eluded the Warriors in the top half of the inning, as Ryan Ramirez hit a game-winning double to bring in Brackenridge and win the game 6-5.
Andy Yingling hit the Warriors' second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead. Chaidez finished 2 for 3 with a double, RBI and run scored.
The Warriors resume California Collegiate Athletic Association play with a four-game home-and-home series against Cal State Monterey Bay beginning Friday. The team returns home Saturday for its final home games of the season with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
