Box Score 2 TURLOCK — Getting the busy Spring Break week off to a good start, the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors picked up a pair of 3-1 wins over Montana State Billings on Wednesday.
In game one, the Warriors won by getting out ahead. Then in the second game, they rallied late for the doubleheader sweep. The victories ended an eight-game losing streak and some recent scoring draught as Stanislaus improved to 13-21 overall heading into its own Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno this weekend.
A pair of RBI singles by
Kristan Burns and
Kiley Mendez in the fourth inning of game one plated two runs. Then in the fifth, pinch runner
Ghianna Falconi scored on a squeeze play put down by
Brittney Rickles for a 3-0 Warriors lead.
That was enough for
Brittani Weatherford to earn a win in the circle with
Natalie Rendon getting the final three outs for the save.
Weatherford returned the favor in game two, closing out Rendon's solid outing, by retiring the Yellowjackets in the seventh.
MSU Billings (8-18) scored first in the first inning of the nightcap on its second first-and-third double-steals play of the day.
However, the Warriors tied it up in the third on a RBI double by Weatherford that scored
Amy Droege. Droege then became the hero in the sixth, delievering a two-run single with two outs to push the Warriors ahead 3-1.
The six-run day was much-needed by the Stanislaus offense, which scored just one run in last weekend's four-game set against Sonoma State. During the eight-game skid, the Warriors had scored just 10 runs while being shutout four times.
Cal State Stanislaus opens the Tournament of Champions play on Friday with a 11:15 a.m. game against Sonoma State at Pedretti Sports Complex. The 26-team, 83-game tournament is being played at three locations in Turlock.
