Broncos take series opener

Box Score TURLOCK -- The Warriors nearly saw their second no-hitter of the season Friday.

This time though, it was their hits column that had a zero in it for most of the game.

But thanks to a first-pitch double by Ross Gonsalves to lead off the bottom of the ninth, Cal State Stanislaus avoided being no-hit by Cal Poly Pomona freshman Max Bethell. The Warriors would score two runs in the ninth to avoid being shutout, but still fell to the Broncos 17-2 in the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series.

Ross' double initially looked off the bat like it might clear the short fence in left field for a homerun, but Broncos left fielder Chris Carlson ran all the way back to the wall, twisting and turning to try and make a play, only to have the ball fall short of the fence and off his forearm for the Warriors' first base hit of the game.

Bethell (4-3) retired eight straight to open the game before issuing his first walk to Matt Chaidez in the third. He retired eight more consecutively before walking Chaidez again in the sixth. A leadoff walk to Craig Beevers in the seventh was still not enough to rattle the rookie, as he got three straight outs to get out of the inning with his no-hitter still in tact.

Meanwhile, the Cal Poly Pomona (19-15, 12-13 CCAA) offense gave Bethell more than enough support. The Broncos only scored in four innings, but two of those frames were big, as they posted 17 runs on 19 hits.

Warriors starter Byron Lemon (1-7) cruised through the first three innings, allowing just one unearned run on two singles with three strikeouts and no walks, and looked to be in control. That was until the fourth inning, when the Broncos exploded for six runs on seven hits, including four straight RBI base hits before the second out in the inning was recorded.

The would tack on three more in the seventh and again blew up for a big inning in the top of the ninth, adding seven runs on six base hits to give Bethell a 17-0 cushion heading into the bottom of the ninth with his no-no.

All of that offense in the top of the ninth may have cooled Bethell down too much, however, as he lost the no-hit bid on the very first pitch he threw to Gonsalves. Beevers would tack on a single through the right side of the infield to give the Warriors two hits for the game.

The Broncos' 5-6-7 hitters of Carlson, Jason Padlo and Joseph Eusebio went a combined 8 for 13 with two doubles, five RBIs and eight runs scored. Pinch-hitter Humberto Tovalin entered the game in the seventh inning and went 2 for 3 with a homerun, two runs scored and three RBIs.

Cal Poly Pomona's top of the order was just as productive, as the 1-2-3 hitters of Trevor Magno, Bo Walter and Jordan Whitman went 7 for 18 with a double, six RBIs and four runs scored.

Gonsalves finished 1 for 4 with a double and run scored. Beevers was 1 for 3 with a walk and a run scored.

The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11 a.m.
