Box Score 3 TURLOCK — At its own Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno, where 26 teams from the West Region converge for the annual event, the Cal State Stanislaus softball team definitely competed before coming up short three times on opening day.
The Warriors (13-24) took 16th ranked Sonoma State to nine innings before falling 7-5 to start the day. Then, against Western Oregon, their final at-bat rally fell short in the 7-6 loss. In the nightcap of the tripleheader, Cal State Stanislaus dropped a messy affair, 10-8, after rallying for three runs in the seventh.
In the end, the Warriors begin the three-day tournament 0-3 with two pool play games on the schedule on Saturday. Stanislaus will face Simon Fraser and Hawaii Pacific on Saturday.
The tournament is being held at the Pedretti Sports Complex, the Turlock Region Sports Complex and Warrior Softball Field over three days this weekend. A total of 83 games will be played during the course of the event.
Cal State Stanislaus trailed in every game but managed comebacks each time. In the first game of the day against Sonoma State (29-8), a team that swept the Warriors in the four-game CCAA series last weekend, Stanislaus fell behind 5-2 but scored three runs in the seventh to tie to force extra innings.
The Warriors trailed 7-4 to Western Oregon (19-18) through five innings, but scored single run sin the sixth and seventh before coming up short.
In the nightcap, a five-run sixth by NDNU (19-14) turned a close game into a 10-5 Argonaut lead. However, in their last at-bat, the Warriors scored three times, highlighted by a two-run double by
Sarah Locarnini.
Locarnini went 6-for-12 with two doubles, a triple, a homerun and drove in six runs to lead the Stanislaus offense on the day.
Lauren Liming had five hits with a double plus two stolen bases.
Kristan Burns drove in four runs.
Brittani Weatherford threw 14-plus of the team's 21 innings in two starts. She gave up five earned runs (of the 13 runs allowed), struckout eight and walked eight.
