Warriors improve to 6-0 at home with 16-point win

TURLOCK — Taking care of business on home court, the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team improved to 6-0 inside Fitzpatrick Arena after a 70-54 blast over Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday night.

Both post starters — Marcus Bell and Rob Walters — recorded double-doubles on the night as the Warriors improved to 9-3 overall and 5-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Bell scored 14 points with 10 rebounds and Walters netted 10 points with a game-high 15 rebounds to lead the way.

Shey Mataele scored 12 points to go with six assists and point guard Sam Marcus also had six assists. Chris Read and Taylor Bell each chipped in nine points. Bell also had three steals and a block to go with his seventh double-double of the year.

For the night, Stanislaus made nine three-pointers on 21 attempts. The Warriors also out-rebounded CSUDH, 41-32.

Darnell Martin had 10 points and 11 rebounds with two blocks to lead the Toros (5-10, 2-6 CCAA).

The Warriors pull away in the second half on the strength of sharp-shooting while Cal State Dominguez Hills struggled from the field. In comparison, the Warriors made 57.7 percent of their shots in the second half while the Toros netted just 7 of 24 (29.2 percent).

Cal State Stanislaus used a 12-3 run early in the second half to turn an one-point lead into an 11-point advantage at 47-36 with 15:17 to play after a three-point play by Walters. That play, with Walters crashing the board for an offensive rebound for the put-back and was fouled in the process sparked the team.

The Warriors allowed the Toros to rallied back as the game got as close as five ploints, 52-47, with 7:40 left to go. However, Stanislaus pull ahead again as CSUDH failed to make another field goal for three minutes.

A 7-0 Stanislaus run capped by a Mataele three-pointer extened the lead to 12 (59-47) as the Warriors held on tfor the weekend sweep.

Cal State Stanislaus, 4-1 in its last five games, hosts a pair of conference games next weekend when Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay visit.
