TURLOCK — Led by
Marcus Bell, five Warriors scored in double figures as Cal State Stanislaus out-scored Cal State East Bay 10-2 in the second overtime period to win a thriller, 89-81, Saturday night.
Bell had 24 points and 13 rebounds and
Rob Walters scored 15 and pulled 12 boards to lead Stanislaus as the Warriors improved to 11-3 overall and 7-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Warriors also move to 8-0 at home inside Fitzpatrick Arena this season.
Bell, who was named the CCAA player of the week for the second time earlier this week, followed his double-double performance on Friday when he had 23 points and 10 rebounds.
However, his eighth double-double didn't come easy.
The senior center was held to just six points in the first half as he went 2-for-10 from the field. The second half wasn't much better for him as he made just four of 10 attempts to finish regulation with 14 points.
Then the big man came up huge in the overtime periods. He scored 10 of the team's 16 points in the extra periods including all six of the team's points in the first OT.
All of the extra time madness was necessary because of a tight game, but the Warriors led by four inside the 1:50 mark and had several chances to put the game away. Two trips down without points sandwiched by a Nick Grieves three-pointer with 42 ticks left turned what could have been an 8-point lead into just an one-point Stanislaus advantage.
Grieves then nailed another trey with 13 seconds left to give the Pioneers their first lead since early in the game.
With time running out,
Sam Marcus drove the lane and converted a layup to tie the score with one second remaining to force overtime.
Walters filled the inside scoring void when Bell wasn't connecting with 15 points — all in regulation time. He contributed greatly on the glass, pulled down some huge defensive rebounds in overtime to help the Warriors secure their fourth consecutive win.
Chris Read, too, was big on offense making 7 of 12 shots for 19 points. He had 15 of those points during regulation as well.
The other two Warriors with double digits in scoring were
Clinton Tremelling and Marcus each with 11. Tremelling's big moment was when he made back-to-back three-pointers to give Stanislaus a 9-point lead, 66-57, at exactly five minutes left to play.
Gabe Kindred and Jacari Whitfield both finished with 19 points and Kyle Frankes added 18 to lead Cal State East Bay (6-10, 3-7 CCAA). The Pioneers are now just 1-6 in their last seven games.
The Warriors will take the four-game home winning streak on the road this upcoming week with contests at Humboldt State and Cal Poly Pomona.
