Chico State manages to hold off Stanislaus late rally

10/1/2014 11:03:00 PM

Box Score TURLOCK - An epic rally in the third and final set by the Warriors fell just short as visiting Chico State held on to win the 3-0 decision over the Cal State Stanislaus volleyball team on Wednesday.

Down by as many as 12 points in the third set, which started with a 7-0 score in favor of the Wildcats, the Warriors held off six match-points before the 25-22, 25-14, 25-20, final score.

Had the Warriors able to play as well as they did during that final stretch for the match, they probably could've blew Chico State away with another win. Instead Stanislaus fell to 1-10 overall and 1-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Chico State improved to 6-5 and 4-3 CCAA.

Lindsay Skadeland led the Warriors with eight kills - five of those came in the third - and Morgan Miller was on fire at the attack as the redshirt freshman put-away seven kills on 11 chances with just one error for an amazing .545 percentage.

Sarah Crowl, who was inserted as the libero for the second and third sets, finished with 14 of the team's 36 digs.

It was a tight battle in the first, where Chico pushed ahead based on a .343 team attacking percentage and the Warriors making unforced errors (three service errors, four attacking errors and two blocking errors). Chico State then blew the Warriors away in the second, 25-14, and was poised to do it again in the third by rolling out to a 7-0 lead.

However, the Warriors rallied back and got within nine at 21-12 on one of those Skadeland kills. Two Chico points later made it 23-12 before Skadeland again starts a rally only to be stopped by a Stanislaus service errors. At 24-14, the Warriors went to work scoring six straight points. Skadeland again started that push with Miller smashing away two kills. Blair Ehrlich, who finished with just six kills, pounded two away during the run to make it 24-20.

Chico's Lindsay Quigley finally ended the match with a blast after Wildcats head coach Cody Hein re-entered starting setter Torey Thompson for the final play.

Stanislaus won't have much time to regroup during a busy week as the Warriors host two more conference matches this weekend. Cal State L.A. (8-2, 6-1) visits Friday before Cal State Dominguez Hills (1-10, 0-7) comes in on Saturday.
