Box Score POMONA - A couple of bounces went against the Warriors and host Cal Poly Pomona got just enough from its offense as the Broncos upset No. 7 Cal State Stanislaus, 1-0, in women's soccer Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos won for the second time this weekend and defended their Kellogg Field while limited the potent Stanislaus offense. Cal Poly Pomona improved to 8-4-0 overall and 4-4-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Pomona is 7-2 at home this season.
Cal Sate Stanislaus lost for the second time on the road this season and fell to 11-2-0, 4-2-0 CCAA. Both losses this season were on the road and by the same 1-0 score.
"We created a ton of chances and just couldn't finish today. That's the way it goes sometimes," CSUS head coach
Gabriel Bolton said.
Scoring chances were aplenty for the Warriors. Early attacks for
Nicole Bare,
Tina Benson and
Karli Nestler all went hight in the first part of the first half.
Jordan Moineau almost got the Warriors on the board 10 minutes into the second half but her shot hit the crossbar. Less than two minutes later, Moineau's shot was saved by Pomona goalkeeper Ricki Ives.
Trailing 1-0,
Sabrina Williamson nearly tied the match in the final minute but Ives again earned a save and kept the Warriors scoreless.
"Cal Poly (Pomona) is a good team and they had an effective game plan especially on their field. We needed to do a better job of capitalizing on our chances," added Bolton.
Ali Sauve scored the match's only goal, at 65:20, for Pomona on a 12-yard shot finishing a cross from Stacey Atwater.
Cal Poly Pomona is now 11-5-1 against the Warriors all-time. Sunday's match was the Warriors' first in Pomona since 2011.
The Warriors will return to Southern California for a contest at Cal State San Bernardino on Friday before hosting Chico State at Warrior Stadium on Sunday.
