Box Score TURLOCK - The Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team was held scoreless for the fourth straight match, but this time the Warriors earned a point in the standings against the top team in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The Stanislaus backline held the 7th ranked Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles off the scoreboard as the Warriors move to 11-4-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the CCAA with their first none-loss in two weeks. The Warriors kept the Golden Eagles from winning a conference game for the first time this season. Cal State L.A., which entered the weekend atop of the conference standings, held on to the spot with a six point lead and is now 13-1-2, 8-0-1 CCAA.
For the Warriors, the current scoring draught has meant that they are now in an uphill battle to get back into the conference tournament. The one point gained Friday night certainly does help the defending CCAA champions remain in the race. Cal State Stanislaus, now in seventh, is one point behind UC San Diego for the sixth and final berth in the tournament with two regular season matches left to play.
The Warriors host Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-13-1, 2-7 CCAA) on Sunday and will need a win for three points to snap the winless streak and to stay in contention.
"I'm incredibly proud of that effort. We made a number of adjustments going into the match and the team executed them very well," CSUS head coach
Gabriel Bolton said.
Despite a 16-8 shot-differential in favor of Cal State L.A., the match was much closer with just a 4-3 count on shots on goal (the Golden Eagles had four).
Bolton credit the defense for the team's seventh shutout this season by keeping the Golden Eagles off the board.
"Defensively the team played fantastic," Bolton added. "I thought Karli, Lauren and Nichole locked down their forwards and didn't really give them any good looks at goal. Most of their shots were from long distance and not dangerous."
Goalkeeper
Chelsea Lewandowski picked up four saves and her fifth shoutout of the year.
Cal State L.A. had all four shots in the first OT but they were all off the mark.
The Warriors' best scoring chances were actually towards the end of the second overtime period.
Jade Poon's blast in the 104th minute was blocked by a defender. Then a scramble in front of the net with
Katelyn Nebesnick picking up a loose ball. Her shot was saved by CSULA goalkeeper Yi Du, who recovered just in time with her tall frame to keep Stanislaus from another dramatic overtime win.
"We created some amazing chances tonight and were a bit unlucky not to score one or two," Bolton said.
Sunday's match against Cal State Dominguez HIlls is at 11:30 a.m. at Warrior Stadium.
