Kirsten Coleman and
Mikayla Clifford each scored a first half goal as the Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team shut-out a tough Humboldt State squad, 2-0, Friday night at Warrior Stadium.
Coleman also had an assist after increasing her season goal total to seven, which third best in the CCAA.
The 17th ranked Warriors posted their sixth shutout of the season in the victory to improve to 9-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association heading into Sunday's showdown with No. 14 Sonoma State (10-0-0, 3-0-0).
Friday night's home victory is also the Warriors' 16th straight during the regular season. Stanislaus is now 5-0 in 2014 on home pitch after an 11-0 campaign in 2013.
"That was a great way to bounce back in front of a fantastic crowd. I really felt like we controlled the match for the full 90 which was great to see," CSU Stanislaus head coach
Gabriel Bolton said.
Humboldt State has lost two straight after a 6-1 start. The three Lumberjack losses are all against ranked opponents, including last Sunday's 2-1 loss at Sonoma State.
Coleman gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute after collecting a ball from
Lauren Thornton. Coleman beat a defender to the right and took a shot from about 18 yards out. In the 36th minute, Clifford made it 2-0, finishing a cross from Coleman.
"Kirsten had a tremendous game and is playing at a high level. All the forwards were very aggressive," said Bolton.
For Stanislaus, it is the team's third shutout against a CCAA opponent in the last four matches. In those three wins - including a non-conference win over Chico State - the Warriors outscored opposition, 4-0. On the year, the Warriors defense and goalkeepers have earned six shutouts. Over the past nine matches, the Warriors have allowed just three goals.
"Defensively we were really in lock down mode. The shots they got were from distance for the most part," added Bolton.
HSU managed 10 shots with four on goal. The four shots were all easily picked up by goalkeeper
Chelsea Lewandowski. Amber Woolcock earned six saves for HSU.
