Deenah San Luis had six hits and
Amy Droege drove in six runs as the new-look Warriors softball team rebounded from two earlier setbacks to win the nightcap on opening day.
San Luis and Droege each went 2-for-4 with the latter driving in three of the runs as Cal State Stanislaus beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 5-4, in the late game of the Best of the West Invitational.
Earlier on Saturday, the Warriors couldn't recover from early-game mistakes and lost to Dominican, 7-5, and Holy Names 9-7 in eight innings.
San Luis, a freshman third baseman, went 6-for-11 in three games with a double and a triple plus three runs batted in to star offensively. Droege hit for the cycle on the day with her four hits, including a home run against Holy Names, and drove in six runs.
Morgan Balestreri, another freshman infielder at second base, had five hits on the day. Senior shortstop
Brittney Rickles also had four hits.
In the 2014 opening day lineups, the Warriors featured just four returning starters.
Natalie Rendon made two appearences in the circle and picked up a win against the Toros as she threw the final three innings of the contest.
Karina Callazo and
Jessica Varady both made their Stanislaus debuts.
Besides Droege, Rendon and Rickles, Briana Nicholson was the only Warriors on the field today that started in 2013. Returners
Angela Mendoza and
Ghianna Falconi platooned in leftfield.
The Warriors pounded out 13 hits in the nightcap against Cal State Dominguez Hills while holding the Toros to just four hits.
The tournament, which features eight teams, concludes on Super Bowl Sunday at Pedretti Sports Complex. The Warriors will play CCAA teams Cal State Monterey Bay at 10 a.m. and San Francisco State at 12:15 p.m.
