Wild late night ends in Fresno Pacific taking both games

2/7/2014 11:57:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FRESNO — The Warriors were unable to come out of a long, wild night of baseball with a win as they were swept by Fresno Pacific, 8-4 and 6-5, Friday night in their first outings of the season.

The doubleheader, in which the Warriors led 5-3 in the nightcap going into the bottom of the ninth, did not finish until around midnight. The doubleheader started an hour late at 5 p.m. with a power outage delay in the seventh inning of game two, which didn't start until 8:20 p.m.

Stanislaus pitchers Dustin Baisdon and Danny Molieri — the two arms the Warriors will be counting on late in games — were not able to close out the Sunbirds as walks and wild pitches ultimately allowed Fresno Pacific to score three times for the twinbill sweep.

The second game ended on a wild pitch.

Stanislaus had scored four times in the sixth to finally take a 5-3 lead as head coach Kenny Leonesio turned the game over to the bullpen. Starter Jeremy McDonald had pitched 5 1/3 innings with postiive results. The lefty gave up three runs on four hits and fanned six batters in his first start this season.

In the Warriors' four run sixth, Colton Beatty highlighted the inning with a bases clearing three-run double down the right-field line. Stevie Robinson had singled in Matt Chaidez as the Warriors strung together three straight two-out singles to keep the inning alive. In fact, they had five straight hits after two quick outs.

Despite the setback, Skippy Ferreria highlighted the nightcap with a 3-for-3 game with a double. He went 2-for-4 in game one for a five-hit day to start the new year. Beatty, returning from a redshirt season in 2013, went 6-for-10 including four hits in the opener.

The Stanislaus offense was hurt by the lack of production in the middle of the lineup as the 3-through-6 batters combined to go 0-for-33 with 14 strikeouts to follow Ferreria and Beatty (11-for-17) in the doubleheader.

Joshua Banuelos went 6-for-8 with five runs batted in in his Sunbird debut to lead Fresno Pacific (3-1). Preseason All-Region pick J.D. Salles struck out 10 Warriors in seven innings and gave up two runs on six hits in the first game.

The teams will meet again in Turlock on Monday at 4 p.m. The original schedule had slated a Saturday night doubleheader for the Warriors' inaugural night game. However, incoming storm has forced games 3 and 4 of the series to be moved to Monday.
