Stanislaus nearly upset #12 CSUSB in exciting contest

2/7/2014 9:48:00 PM

Box Score TURLOCK — Against the No. 12 ranked Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes, the Warriors gave it all they had even without a key post player. In the end, a near miss three-point try was the difference before the Warriors fell for first time at home, 77-75.

Clinton Tremelling had a chance to make the huge student crowd of nearly 1,400 explode with a three-point attempt from the corner. His shot rimmed out with Marcus Bell pulling the rebound for the put-back. But time had expired as Bell handled the offensive rebound and the shot was waved off.

The exciting game, especially in the final minutes, sent the homecoming crowd into a frenzy as the Warriors rallied. But the Warriors fell for the first time at home this season (10-1) to move to 13-6 overall and 9-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Bell, who again wowed the fans with dazzling inside moves — at one time picking off a pass and going coast-to-coast for a dunk — finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds for his 11th double-double. Bell was missing his tag-team partner Rob Walters who sat out with a concussion.

The Warriors trailed by nine, 75-66, with 50 seconds left to play — and the students in the stands were just looking forward to the end-of-the-game crowning of Mrs. and Mrs. Warrior. But the Warriors put on a show in the final minute.

Bell made a layup, followed by a pair of Chris Read free throws, to pull the team within five. Then Sam Marcus forced a CSUSB turnover on the inbounds play that led to a Read bucket with 22 seconds left for a 75-72 score.

All of the sudden the Warriors had a chance.

After Taylor Statham made one of two free throws to put the Coyotes back up by four, Warrior sophomore Alek Carlson drained a three-pointer to pull his team within one with 9.2 seconds remaining.

CSUSB's Lacy Haddock converted on one of two free throws to set up the final sequence. As Bell grabbed the defensive rebound, he dribbled up the court as the Warriors swung to the corner in front of their bench to get the shot they wanted.

Tremelling, who was hitting nearly 45 percent of his three-point attempts for the season, had an open look but his shot circled the rim and failed to fall in.

In the end, the valiant effort was supported by 19 points from Read. Marcus scored 11 points with seven assists and Carlson ended up with 10 points. Stanislaus, which shot 50.9 percent from the field, was 5-for-17 from the arc while CSUSB made 6 of 14 long range shots. The Coyotes seemingly had a answer to every Stanislaus rally and finished with 56.3 percent shooting.

Haddock led CSUSB with 17 points and Kirby Gardner had 14. San Bernardino, which had a 16-game winning streak snapped last week at home against Cal Poly Pomona improved to 17-2 overall and 14-1 in the CCAA in first place. Cal State Monterey Bay upset Cal Poly Pomona, 60-57, in Pomona.
