Box Score TURLOCK — For the second straight night it came down to the Warriors' final possession. And, unfortunately for the Warriors, they came up short once again — this time to UC San Diego.
Clinton Tremelling was given the ball for the final shot for the second straight night. However, as he pulls up around the free throw line for a short jumper to tie the game, he was called for a foul to end Stanislaus' hopes. A Triton stepped in front of Tremelling and falls to get the call with 1.3 seconds left to take over the basketball, and the 67-65 game.
The Warriors, now 13-7 overall and 9-7 in the CCAA, all of a sudden have lost two straight at home after 10 consecutive victories inside Fitzpatrick Arena. Stanislaus is now in a three-way tie for fourth place in the CCAA standings.
UC San Diego (12-8, 8-8 CCAA), a team which lives on its success or failures of three-point shots, made its long range shots count tonight. The Tritons made nine three-pointers — out of 30 attempts — to edge the Warriors. UCSD made 11 treys Friday night to upset Chico State.
On the other side, the Warriors struggled with the long jumper hitting on just 4 of 12 Saturday night.
Marcus Bell took over the game late in the second half and finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
Chris Read also picked up a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Bell was finally sent to the line down the stretch after being doubled and tripled teamed down-low for most of the game. He finished with 8 of 15 from the line but missed three of his last four attempts.
Cal State Stanislaus made a late run after trailing by eight points with 4:57 to go after a pair of James McCann free throws. The Warriors cut the deficit down to two on a 6-0 run with buckets by Read,
Taylor Bell and a pair of
Marcus Bell free throws.
But a three-pointer by Aleks Lipovic put UCSD back up by five at 2:30. While the Tritions did not make another field goal in the final minutes, they made two free throws on two separate 1-and-1 tries to hold on.
The Warriors will be on the road for two weeks before wrapping up the regular season at home on Feb. 28 and March 1 versus Cal Poly Pomona and Humboldt State.
