Box Score TURLOCK —
Marcus Bell had 30 points on senior night as Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball defeated the Lumberjacks, 84-72, Saturday.
The CCAA conference tournament bound Warriors improved to 18-8 overall and 14-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Warriors will be the fourth seed in the tournament and will take on Cal State L.A. on Thursday at 12:05 p.m.
But the Warriors, who had already locked up the No. 4 seed prior to the weekend, didn't think that far ahead as they wanted to finish at home strong.
And they did just that with the impressive win over the Lumberjacks (11-17, 6-16 CCAA) while extending their winning streak to four games.
Stanislaus defended its home court with a 12-2 mark. In fact, the Warriors were just two last-second shots away from being perfect at Fitzpatrick Arena (Feb. 7-8 vs. Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego, both two-point losses when the Warriors has a chance to win with their final possession).
The Warriors, ranked No. 9 in this week's regional poll, also wrapped up their regular season with 18 wins, the mos since the 18-win season of 2002-03.
On Saturday, showing why he is a candidate for the CCAA player of the year award, Bell wasted little time getting to work on the Lumberjacks. The senior from Modesto scored 21 of his points in just 16 minutes of play in the first half to help the Warriors take a 40-35 halftime lead.
In the first half, Bell only missed once from the field (6 for 7) and made 9 of 12 free throws to take charge. While he only needed to score nine points in the second half, he added one five more rebounds in just eight minutes of play.
Bell finished with the career high 30 and just one rebound shy of another double-double, which would have been his 16th this season. He has scored in double figures 23 times in 26 games. He surpassed the 20-point mark 14 times.
Chris Read chipped in 11 points and
Tyler Barber scored eight off the bench. The other two seniors
Sam Marcus and
Taylor Bell netted six and seven points, respectively, in their final home game.
The Warriors will be making their third trip to the conference tournament in the last four years. In 2011, the Warriors lost the opening round game at Humboldt State and in 2012 they lost to Cal Poly Pomona by two points. Both of those opening round games were on the road on campus sites. The new six-team format calls for all tournament games to be played on neutral site at Ontario's Citizens Business Bank Arena.
Should the Warriors win on Thursday they would play top seed Cal State San Bernardino on Friday at 12:05 p.m.
Thursday's game is available locally on KEFC 100.5 FM or globally on kefc.net with Bryan Nelson and Eric Davis calling the plays from Ontario.
