Box Score 2 POMONA — The top of the order did a bunch of damage in the final two innings of game one as Cal State Stanislaus upsets No. 12 Cal Poly Pomona before picking up a doubleheader split on Friday.
The Warriors scored twice in each of the final two innings and held off a Broncos rally in their final at-bats for the 4-3 win, which ended an eight-game losing streak. Pomona got to
Jeremy McDonald early in the seven-inning nightcap and the Warriors offense slowed down a bit for a 6-1 decision for the split.
Marcus Mastrobuoni went 3-for-5 in game one, including a single in the eight and a double in the ninth to key the Warriors game one 13-hit parade victory. Leadoff man
Skippy Ferreria went 2-for-5 and
Dayton Mellor, who was batting third, had both of his hits in the final two innings.
Brent Hall, who batted fifth in the lineup, also had three hits in the game.
Four straight singles in the eighth led to two runs by Stanislaus to make it a 2-2 game. Mastrobuoni, who batted second, doubled in Ferreria in the ninth and scored a batter later off a Mellor single to make it 4-2.
Pomona (28-11, 21-10 CCAA) staged its own rally in the ninth with a triple by Brennen Salgado with one out. He would score on a Warrior fielding error off the bat of Trevor Magno. Magno would work his way around to third before being stranded.
David Snapp pitched the final two innings and gave up one run on one hit to earn the victory out of the bullpen.
The Warriors improved to 12-27 overall and 6-24 in CCAA play.
In the nightcap, the Broncos scored four runs in the third to make it 5-1 en route to the seven-inning win. Pomona used six hits and 10 batters in the frame off Stanislaus starter McDonald. The Broncos loaded the bases in the fourth to chase McDonald before
Danny Molieri got a grounder to end the threat and further scoring.
The Warriors scored their lone run in game two when
Clint Brill doubled in Hall. Ferreria had two more hits in the nightcap to account.
The series finale is on Saturday at Scolinos Field at 11 a.m.
