No. 8 Warriors take down Simon Fraser to improve to 4-0

9/11/2014 11:43:00 PM

Box Score TURLOCK — Guess who scored twice more for the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors — yep, Jade Poon.

The fabulous freshman netted two more goals as the No. 8 ranked Warriors defeated Simon Fraser, 2-0, Thursday night in the feature match of the Warrior Challenge at Warrior Stadium. If you are counting, that's seven goals in four matches for Poon (3 1/2 matches if you want to get technical after Poon missed the start on Monday attending class).

While the Warriors run their season record to a perfect, 4-0-0, the match certainly wasn't only about the scoring touch of the freshman from Sacramento. The Warriors collectively out-played the much-improved Clan squad in a physical game. In all, the Warriors out-shot SFU (0-3-0) 22-4 with a 10-1 corner kick advantage.

"We gave a great effort tonight. Sometimes you are going to play teams that just want to make the game ugly. You have to have the mental toughness to play your style," Stanislaus head coach Gabriel Bolton said. "SFU played tough. They wanted to kill the game. It's the first time I've ever seen a team that's losing waste time. When a team is determined to do that it's tough to get into a great rhythm."

Poon, who scored a hat-trick in Monday's 6-1 win over Central Washington, put the Warriors on the board in the 12th minute. Tina Benson's long pass from center to the top of the box was mishandled by a SFU defender and goalkeeper Priya Sandhu. Poon was there to collect the ball and walked in the goal to make it 1-0.

The Clan managed to keep the Warriors from any great scoring chances the rest of the game despite the Stanislaus offense continuing to put pressure on the SFU backline. Sandhu did earn three saves in goal.

In the 54th minute, Poon was again tripped in the box as she tried to turn on a defender and was awarded a penalty kick — which she booted in hard to the right to make it 2-0.

The rest of the Warriors' team effort of controlling possessions and defending for the victory. Katie Foster improved to 2-0 with two shutouts in net without being challenged by SFU.

"We did a nice job in possession completing 428 passes," Bolton added. "I love the fact that we have seen many different opponents, some that want to play soccer and some that don't, and we have adapted very well."

A year ago when Simon Fraser came to Turlock, the Warriors beat the team from of Burnaby, British Columbia, 6-0.

The Warrior Challenge continues on Saturday with two more matches. At 11:30 a.m., Humboldt State, which beat Academy of Art, 4-0, on Thursday, will face Simon Fraser. The Warriors host Academy of Art at 7 p.m. after the Stanislaus men take on California Baptist at 2:30 p.m.
