Box Score TURLOCK —For the entire first half, Academy of Art successfully packed in on the defensive end and kept the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors from scoring. However, the 8th ranked Warriors continued to press offensively and exploded for four goals in about a 21-minute span for the victory Saturday night.
Mikayla Clifford jumped started the scoring with a pair of scores. Then
Kirsten Coleman and
Jordan Moineau connected twice on corner-kick-header goals as the Warriors beat Academy of Art (0-4-0), 4-0, to conclude the inaugural Warrior Challenge.
Humboldt State, which defeated Simon Fraser 4-2, in the morning match was declared the tournament winner by virtue of winning the goal-differential tiebreaker over the Warriors.
"We played a fantastic game tonight and accomplished every goal we set at the beginning of the match," Stanislaus head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. "We kept incredible possession tonight and in the second half scored some great goals."
With a steller midfield and strong backline, the Stanislaus goalkeepers again sat back and watched the incredible team ahead of them as they controlled the match.
Chelsea Lewandowski was the winning goalkeeper as she faced just two shots — either of them on frame. Thursday night,
Katie Foster saw four shots off the mark all night against Simon Fraser.
"That's the second game in a row we haven't allowed a shot on goal. That a tribute to our great possession and our back line working very well together." Bolton said.
AAU employed the game plan of sitting back defending with as many players as possible. The Warriors took 11 shots in the first half with three on goal as Urban Knight goalkeeper Rachael Rempe picked up three saves to keep the match scoreless. Stanislaus would finish with a 25-2 shot advantage and took 17 corner kicks.
In the 55th minute, Clifford opened the flood gates with her first goal of the night. Moments later, at 65:23, Clifford made it 2-0 after collecting a long pass from
Karli Nestler to the far side for the score.
In the 69th minute, Moineau sent a corner into the box to find Coleman for a header goal. Then, during a sequence of six straight corner kicks by the Warriors — five consecutive from Moineau — the final one serviced by Moineau again found Coleman for another header score to make it 4-0.
"Kirsten is just incredible in the air and Jordan delivered some fantastic corner kicks. They have been working hard to connect for goals and it paid off tonight," Bolton said.
Despite giving up four goals in each match, Rempe was tested time and time again as she faced 42 shots and 26 on goal. In all, she earned 18 saves.
Jade Poon, who had two goals on Thursday, was blanketed by the AAU defense and managed to take four shots off mark. She was also named to the All-Tournament team along with Clifford, Coleman, and Nestler.
The Warriors have stretched their regular season unbeaten streak to 21 games (19-0-2).
