Box Score TURLOCK —
Sara Latham waited a long time to put a ball into the net as a Warrior — and she did it twice Thursday night as she led the No. 3 Cal State Stanislaus Warriors to an easy 6-1 win over UC Santa Cruz.
Jade Poon, the fabulous freshman from Sacramento, also scored twice to run her season total to nine as the Warriors improved to 6-0-0 while extending their streak to 17 consecutive home victories during the regular season.
Latham, who is from Turlock, made her return home prior to the 2013 season but had to sit the year as a redshirt. Before the stint at the University of Houston, Latham was a JC All-American at Modesto Junior College in 2010 and tallied 40 goals in two seasons.
Thursday night, Latham's first goal as a Warrior came at 39:34, which gave Stanislaus a 2-0 lead. The 2010 Turlock High graduate would later tagged on a second score, in the 69th minute, to put the match out of reach at 5-1.
"There is no person more deserving of success than Sara. She works as hard or harder than any player that's ever worn a Warrior uniform," head coach
Gabriel Bolton said. "She is a great example of perseverance, patience, and work ethic paying off. I'm very proud of her."
Poon had put the Warriors ahead 1-0 in the 13th minute after receiving another great service from
Karli Nestler from the middle of the field into the top of the circle. Poon beautifully blasted the ball to the upper right for her eighth of the year. With the score at 2-1 — UCSC caught the Warriors off-guard 2:22 into the second half on a Sarah Sadler goal — Poon made it 3-1 on a good teamwork play with passes from
Tina Benson and
Kirsten Coleman on a give-and-go with Poon splitting the defenders to finish.
Lauren Thornton, a defender with one assist to her credit in four seasons, was able to net her first goal on a penalty kick try at 62:45. Latham and
Maryssa McDuffy made it 5-1 in the 69th minute and in the 89th minute,
Mireya Magana connected with
Keshia Lyons for the freshman's first goal.
"That was a great team win tonight. Lots of players contributed to that effort and played at a very high level," Bolton added.
Nestler, a center defender, now has five assists on the season.
Katie Foster started in net to earn the win before giving way to
Giovana Treyes for the final 11 minutes.
Sadler now has nine goals for the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs (4-5-1).
"(UC) Santa Cruz was very well organized and (they) made continuous tactical adjustments which made things difficult," commented Bolton. "I was proud of how we used our skill to solve problems."
The Warriors, now with a regular season unbeaten streak at 24 games (22-0-2), will travel to Chico State on Sunday to take on the Wildcats in a non-CCAA tilt. Chico State is coming off two wins last weekend, including a 1-0 victory over then-No. 24 Seattle Pacific.
