9/19/2014 11:41:00 PM

Box Score TURLOCK — Despite a great effort in their home debut for 2014, the Warriors volleyball team came up just short in three of the four sets in falling to visiting Cal State Monterey Bay, 25-23, 25-23, 32-34, 25-20, Friday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.

Sophomore Paige Walker led all players with 15 kills and an impressive .464 attacking percentage and Blair Ehrlich played defense with 20 digs to go with her eight kills to pace Cal State Stanislaus, which is still looking for its first win this season after seven matches. Cal State Monterey Bay managed to earn its first win of the year to move to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

And yes, that third set score was correct — 34-32, in favor of the Warriors, in an epic battle that had the excited crowd of more than 250 on their feet.

Set number three gave the fans on both sides a lot to cheer about. After the Otters used three straight points to go up 22-15, the Warriors rolled off five straight to get back into the match at 22-20. Holding off set-point three times, Stanislaus took over at 25-24 in the run that included two kills by Jocelyn Cervantes. Then it was back and forth with each team alternating advantage on serve until Walker put-away two straight for points 32 and 33. The Warriors took the thrilling set 34-32 when Green and Jordan Harris blocked an attack by Jessica Malcom.

For Walker, the 15 kills (on 28 tries with just two errors) was her highest total since a career high 16 last Oct. 19 at Cal  Poly Pomona. The .464 average was her career best and the first time she hit better than .400. She had double-digit in kills 12 times in 30 matches last season.

Harris notched a season-best with nine kills while Lindsay Skadeland also chipped in eight kills. Helping out Ehrlich on digs were Cervantes with 11 while Hailey Gruetzmacher and Sarah Crowl each had nine.

Malcolm finished with 14 kills to lead CSUMB, which also recorded 20 total blocks. D.J. Gresham-Ryder had nine of those blocks with two solos to go with 12 kills. Leanna Moleta picked up 39 assists, five service aces and 14 digs plus five kills for a great all-around night.

The Warriors will return Saturday night as they host Cal State East Bay at 7 p.m.
