Victory! Team effort leads to first win of the season

Box Score TURLOCK — In a much improved team effort, the Cal State Stanislaus volleyball team held off the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay as the Warriors earned their first victory of the season in four sets, 25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 25-18.

Four different Warriors had at least nine kills, as a team the Warriors dug up 63 CSUEB attacks and blocked five shots as they finally got rid of the zero in the win-column after eight tries.

The win marks the Warriors' fourth over Cal State East Bay in the last five meetings in the series.

"It is really nice to see the team compete in a match at the high level they do each day in practice," head coach Chris Lore said. "This conference is tough and (Cal State) East Bay is a good team. It was a great win to have."

Blair Ehrlich had a match-best and season high 16 kills with a career-best attacking percentage of .364 and Lindsay Skadeland had her best match as a Warrior with 13 kills (.281). Jocelyn Cervantes chipped in 11 kills and four total blocks (1 solo) while Paige Walker, who had 15 Friday night, completed her solid weekend with nine more kills.

Defensively for Stanisalus, libero Hailey Gruetzmacher recorded 21 digs while setter Rachel Parsons picked up 12 and Walker had nine digs to her credit. Morgan Miller came off the bench to supply the spark late at the net with three assisted blocks.

After split the first two sets, the Warriors took control over a tight-third set halfway through with runs of five and six points in two separate rallies. Skadeland, who had five of her 13 kills during the third, gave the Warriors their first set point at 24-17 before CSUEB's Amber Hall's miscue that gave the Warriors the 2-1 lead.

In the fourth, Ehrlich took over. After a 10 for 23 and three error stat-line through three sets, Ehrlich went 6-for-10 and just one error to lead the charge in the decisive set. The Warriors rolled off to a 5-0 start capped by one of those kills by Ehrlich. After four different 6-point leads, with the last at 22-16, Stanislaus finally put the match away. Ehrlich was accounted for two more kills with the finale a booming slam off of an attempted CSUEB block for the win.

Samantha Bruno was the top Pioneer with 15 kills while Amber Hall added 12. Cal State East Bay dropped both matches on the road at Chico and Stanislaus this weekend.

The Warriors' homestand was short-lived as they will again travel next week with matches at Humboldt State (Thursday) and Cal State San Bernardino (Saturday).
