Box Score SEASIDE - The up-start Otters held the potent Cal State Stanislaus offense in check on Sunday as Cal State Monterey Bay blanked the third-ranked Warriors, 1-0, snapping a number of streaks.
Kristen Womack's goal in the 62nd minute broke the stalemate and ended up as the match's only score as Cal State Monterey Bay beat Stanislaus for the first time in the last eight tries. The Otters improved to 4-3-0, 1-1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
"Both teams played very well and unfortunately for us Monterey Bay made one more play than we did today. You have to give Monterey and (CSUMB coach) Erin (Reinke) full credit for an outstanding performance," said CSUS head coach
Gabriel Bolton.
The Warriors are now 8-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the CCAA heading into next weekend's home matches against Humboldt State and Sonoma State.
On Friday, at No. 20 Sonoma State, CSUMB nearly pulled off that upset and led 2-1 before dropping a 3-2 decision late.
"Every game in this conference is tough especially on the road. We gave a full effort but just couldn't pull it out today." Bolton said.
The teams battled evenly but the high-scoring offense of the Warriors were held to just 10 shots with three on frame.
Jordan Moineau had a chance in the 27th minute but CSUMB goalie Lily Garza picked up the save. Moments later, in the 34th minute, a blast by
Sara Latham in close range was saved by an Otter defender for one of the Warriors' best scoring opportunities. On the play, Garza was injuried when she collided with Latham, forcing CSUMB to put in Samantha Webb in goal.
Webb held her own as well against Stanislaus the rest of the game as the Warriors came up empty on four consecutive scoring chances in the middle of the second half with shots going high or wide.
For Stanislaus, the loss snapped a number of streaks. It is the Warriors' first defeat away from Warrior Stadium during the regular season since the middle of 2011 season, a stretch of 25 unbeaten matches of 21-0-4.
Additionally, it was also the Warriors' first regular season loss in 28 matches, during which time they had gone 26-0-2. Lastly, it was Stanislaus's first setback during CCAA play in 18 contests (15-1-2).
"When you look at the streaks that came to an end today its pretty amazing. It says a lot about the quality of our team and players the last few years," added Bolton. "I'm very proud of our program and the women that built us to where we are today."
The last time the high-flying Stanislaus offense was held scoreless in a regular season match was Oct. 21, 2011 - also a 1-0 loss to Cal State Monterey Bay. The Warriors have only been shutout three times since that date. The only other time was during the 1-0 defeat to Cal State San Bernardino in the 2013 NCAA Championships second round match.
