Conference Openers
The Warriors have won three of their last four CCAA season openers since 2013-14, losing last year's on the road at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The last time the Warriors start the CCAA schedule at home was in 2015-16 when they won both games that week, over Cal State San Bernardino and San Francisco State.
X Marks the Spot
Xavier Francois was the Warrior in the spotlight this past weekend as the forward contributed greatly off the bench. For his efforts, he made the PacWest/CCAA Challenge All-Tournament team. In a total of 43 minutes of play in two games, Francois scored 27 points with 14 rebounds. He shot 66.7 percent (10 for 15) and made 7 of 12 free throws. He currently leads the CCAA with that 66.7 shooting percentage.
Taking the Lead
Aside for about four minutes late in the second half on Friday's game at Dominican, the Warriors have held the lead the rest of the time in the two games in San Rafael. Stan State led from the tip against Dominican until 4:47 in the second half, before regaining the advantage in the final seconds. Against Academy of Art, the Warriors led for all but a few seconds in the first half and held the upper-hand for the entire second half.
Nine-Assist Game for Davis
Ty Davis dished nine assists in Saturday's win over Academy of Art, the most assists by a Warriors since almost exactly a year ago. Stephen Evans had 11 assists on Nov. 12, 2016 against the same Art U team.
The Memorable Upset Over Pomona
When the high-flying 20th ranked Cal Poly Pomona team came into the Fitz back on Feb. 20, 2016 with a 20-5 record, the struggling Warriors (at 6-16) had nothing to lose, so they played loose. The results was an epic upset as the Warriors beat the Broncos that night, 80-68, in overtime by outscoring them 18-6 in the extra period. Kyle Gouveia was one of the stars that night with a 21-point, 11-rebound, two blocked shot performance. Vondel Faniel, now a student assistant, had 15 boards and seven points to help Stan State.
Against His Former Teams
Co-head coach Larry Reynolds will be facing a former team for the second time this season when the Warriors host Cal State San Bernardino Wednesday night. Reynolds spent five seasons at CSUSB and led the team to three CCAA championships, a regional title and advanced as far as the NCAA quarterfinals twice. He was named CCAA coach of the year there four times in five seasons with four 20-plus win seasons … Earlier this season, in an exhibition contest, Stan State played UC Riverside, where Reynolds spent time as an associate head coach.Â
