Warriors host Sonoma State, Cal State L.A.

The Warriors will host a pair of conference games this week on home court as they welcome Sonoma State (Tuesday) and Cal State L.A. (Saturday). Tuesday's game is a single-game with an early start time of 5:30 p.m.

Low scoring Game?
If history is any indication, this could be another low-scoring affair between the Warriors and Sonoma State. In the last three meetings, the highest total by any team was 64 with an average margin score of 10.3. The Warriors averaged 50 points in those three games. So far in 2017, however, both teams are scoring at a higher pace. Sonoma State has averaged 76.0 points per game and the Warriors 70.8.

High Flying Offenses
With the way both teams can shoot the three-pointers, Saturday night's game could be a shootout. Cal State L.A. has made 80 (of 199) three-point tries (.402 pct.) and the Warriors have converted on 50 of 151 (.331). L.A. had made 49.1 percent of its three-point attempts during two CCAA games (13.5 per game).

Cleaves Hits From Arch
Andy Cleaves
continues to hit the long range shots as he went 2-for-3 in each game last week. For the season he's 15 of 29 for 51.7 percent. In three CCAA games, he's made an impressive 55.6 percent of his three-point attempts, going 10 for 18.

Faniel Explodes for 22
Vida Faniel
had his coming out party last Tuesday in the non-conference game at Fresno Pacific. He netted a career-high 22 points by going perfect 10-for-10 at the free throw line. He's the second Warrior to score 20-plus points this season after Andy Cleaves' 35-point performance on Nov. 15

Handling the Rock
So far in six games, the Warriors have shown they can handle the basketball. They have committed fewer turnovers than their opponents in all six games and is averaging just 11.2 turnovers per game. The team's lowest TO tally was seven on Nov. 15 against Cal State San Bernardino.

Davis Hits Career High
A week after recording the program's first triple-double in nearly 15 years, Ty Davis put-up a career high 16 points at Fresno Pacific last Tuesday. He was 6 of 13 from the field shooting.

Gouveia Stepping Up
With more offensive weapons this season, Kyle Gouveia has not been needed to score much. However, the senior center led the team in rebounding in each of the last two games. Additionally, he scored 10 points at Fresno Pacific for his 26th career double-digit scoring game.

Held Under 60
The Warriors were held under 60 points in both CCAA defeats. They lost to Cal Poly Pomona by scoring just 46 points and had 59 in the loss at Chico State on Saturday. Both times the Warriors shot under 34 percent.

Numbers Game
Stan State got within five points of No. 16 Chico State with 10 minutes left to play after being down by 17 points … The Warriors have made 43 free throws (61 tries) in the last two games (70.5 percent) … The Warriors scored 30 points off 22 Fresno Pacific turnovers last Tuesday.

Sonoma State SEAWOLVES (3-1, 1-0 CCAA)
Series Notes: 
Sonoma State has won three straight in the head to head series after snapping a four-game Warriors winning streak from 2013-15. SSU leads the all-time mark 24-13.

Last Time We Met... was Feb. 4, 2017 in Rohnert Park in a 56-47 decision in favor of Sonoma State. Stan State shot just 35.4 percent in a game led by Vondel Faniel who had 10 points and 7 rebounds.

About the Seawolves: The Seawolves won their CCAA opener at Cal State Monterey Bay last Saturday, 72-64. Jackson Gion and Armani Nicolis each scored 18 to lead SSU … Nicolis leads the team with 20 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. 

Cal State L.A. GOLDEN EAGLES (6-1, 2-0 CCAA)
Series Notes: 
The Golden Eagles are looking to stretch their winning streak over Stanislaus to three games and are now 23-14 against the Warriors.

Last Time We Met... was on Jan. 14, 2017 in Turlock with L.A. victorious, 66-59 despite four Warriors in double figures. Vondel Faneil scored 19 with 12 rebounds that night. Kaelen Mitchell chipped in 13.

About the Golden Eagles: Cal State L.A. has won five straight with the most potent offense in the CCAA so far. LA is averaging 89.5 points after two conference games with a winning margin of 17 points … Garrett Carter leads four players in double figures with 15.6 points per game.
