Home Cookin'
So far this season, the Warriors are 3-1 in home games with three of those California Collegiate Athletic Association victories. Last season, Stan State won four of 12 home games.Â
CCAA Road Games
The Warriors are trying to establish some success on the road, particularly during CCAA play. So far this season, they are 3-0 in non-conference games away from Turlock but loss the only CCAA road contest at Chico. Historically, the Warriors have not done well in away conference games. They were 6-5 in these games during the 2014-15, 2011-12 and 2006-07 seasons — the only three times they had a winning record. Stanislaus made the CCAA tournament in both 2014-15 and 2011-12 (there was not a postseason tournament in 2006-07).
Winning in Arcata
Humboldt State's Lumberjack Arena is one of the most difficult places for visiting teams to win and the Warriors will again be facing that challenge on Thurdsay. The Lumberjacks are 118-32 in home games since the facility opened in 2008. Further, HSU is 212-43 at home since 2000 … Last January 21, the Warriors posted their first win in Arcata in 13 tries during the CCAA era.
Tuesday Faniel
Vida Faniel likes playing on Tuesdays. In each of the last two Tuesday games, he scored 20 or more points with 22 at Fresno Pacific and 23 versus Sonoma State. In the two Tuesday games, he's 13 for 23 FG (.565) with four three-pointers and 15-for-15 at the foul line to average 22.5 points. He scored a total of 34 points in the six non-Tuesday games.Â
Automatic at the Line
Vida Faniel has been near-perfect at the free throw line. He's 22 for 23 for the season including a current streak of 21 consecutive free throws made. The Stan State record is 33 straight (Calvin Westbrook in 2007-08) … Andy Cleaves connected on 87 percent of his foul shots (20-for-23) with the last 11 straight made.
Stepping Up the Defense
The Warriors went from having the 5th worst defense (based on points allowed) in the CCAA to being the sixth best in a week. The Warriors allowed 75.3 points a game in the first three CCAA games but gave up just a total of 119 in two games last week. Stan State shut-down the potent LA offense, limiting the Golden Eagles to just 52 points.
Best Game For Gouveia So Far
Kyle Gouveia enjoyed his best game so far this season on Saturday with a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) against Cal State L.A. He also had two assists.
Trending Numbers
Looks like there are some statistics that are key to the Warriors' success. So far in eight games, the Warriors are undefeated when leading at halftime (3-0), leading with 5-minutes left to play (5-0), out-rebounding teams (5-0), shot 40 percent or better (5-0), out-shot opponents (5-0) and scored more than 60 points (6-0).
