Warriors host San Francisco State on Saturday

This weekend Stan State will be back at home for a single conference matchup on Saturday. The Warriors will host San Francisco State for their only competition against the Gators this season.

Saturday
Warriors vs. San Francisco State (4-13, 2-12 CCAA), Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena, 5:30 p.m. | [Live Stats] [Live Video] [Live Audio Only]

Monumental Victory: Last Thursday the Warriors caused a major upset in the conference when they beat the No. 24 ranked UC San Diego Tritons in La Jolla. Stan State took down UCSD by just four points (82-78) to give the Tritons their first conference loss of the season. Prior to Thursday's competition UC San Diego had gone undefeated in the CCAA and had only two losses in preseason, both of which were to nationally ranked teams. The Tritons are currently the top offensive and defensive team in the league, but the Warriors demonstrated impressive shooting efficiency which proved to be more effective than UCSD's defensive efforts. Stan State had five players score double digit points which totaled 71 of the Warriors overall points scored. Thursday night was Stan State's first conference road win of the season, with only one other victory on the road overall.

Davis Leads Upset: Against UCSD Kyanna Davis scored a career high 21 points. She went 6-for-10 from the field banking two three-pointers, and she was 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. In the second half alone Davis scored 15 points going 4-for-6 from the field and making six free-throws in the final minute of the game. Her impressive performance earned her the CCAA player of the week honor for the week of Jan. 15-21. She is the first Warrior to earn the honor this season.

An Impressive Comeback: Against the Tritons on Thursday Angelica Baylon also gave an impressive performance. After spending weeks on the sidelines due to an injury, it seems that Baylon has had no difficulty returning to the court. Against UCSD she was one of five Warriors in the double-digits, scoring 12 points and going 5-for-7 from the field.  Saturday was Baylon's third game in a row in double-digit scoring, her longest streak yet. On top of that she had five assists and six steals. Baylon is only the second Warrior this season to earn five or more assists in a game.

Double Duty Leadership: Against Cal State San Marcos on Saturday senior center Erika Larsen led her team in both points and rebounds. She scored 15 points as one of three Warriors in the double-digits. Larsen was 7-for-8 from the field and 1-for-1 from the free-throw line. Not taking a single shot in the first half, Larsen redeemed herself by banking five jumpers and two layups in the second half. She was just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds against the Cougars. Larsen tallied five offensive rebounds and four defensive rebounds. With an average of seven rebounds per game Larsen is tenth in the conference in rebounds per CCAA competition.

Success in The Conference: Before last week the Warriors were ninth in the conference with a scoring average of 62.9 points per game. After their respectable performance against UC San Diego and a close game against Cal State San Marcos, Stan State is now tied for fourth in the CCAA with a 65 point per game average.

This Week's Opponent

San Francisco State GATORS (4-13, 2-12 CCAA)

Series Notes: The Warriors are 21-17 against San Francisco State, defeating them twice last spring. Stan State is currently on a six-game winning streak against the Gators, having not lost to them since the spring of 2014.

Last Time We Met... was on Feb. 3 of last season. The Warriors traveled to The Swamp and defeated the Gators 64-57. Erika Larsen scored twelve points and Lizzy Alexander scored nine points against SFU.

About the Gators: Jhaina Stephens leads the Gators with an average of 15.4 points per game. Stephens is currently fifth in the CCAA, scoring 14.7 points per CCAA competition. Courtenay Brown is the Gator's next highest point-earner, scoring an average of 11.1 points per game. Stephens is also SFU's leading rebounder with 9.9 rebounds per game, and is third in the conference with a 9.4 conference rebounding average. Imani Smith is another strong influence on the Gator's rebounding efforts with 8.3 rebounds per game ... As a team, San Francisco State shoots 40.8 percent from the field. They shoot 32.6 percent from the three-point arc and 65.6 percent from the free-throw line ... Last weekend the Gator's stayed in the bay, traveling to Cal State East Bay on Friday and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday. SFU lost to the Pioneers 58-64, and lost to the Otters 47-73.
