Big Win on Homecoming
The Warriors posted a terrific victory last Thursday on Homecoming Night, beating Chico State 88-78 in front of the largest crowd of the season. It was the program's first Homecoming win since Feb. 15, 2013, snapping a four-game skid on the big night.
Mitchell Nails Career Best
Kaelen Mitchell scored a career-high 21 points last Thursday, hitting 8 of 14 from the field and made five (of 10) three-pointers. He's extended his current hot streak to five consecutive double-digit games. In these five games, he tallied 82 points (16.0 ppg) on 30 of 56 shooting (.536). He was also 18 for 41 (.439) from the three-point arch … He now has 11 double-digit scoring games this season (26 in his two-year Stan State carer).
Five Warriors in Double Figures, Again
The Warriors have proven to be tough to beat when they can spread the offense around. Last Thursday, for the fifth time this season, five Warriors scored in double digits in the win over Chico State. Kalene Mitchell led the way with 21 points, Vida Faniel scored 18, Ty Davis netted in 15 while Kyle Gouveia and Xavier Francois each chipped in 12 points.
Andy Can Fly
If you've seen the Warriors play, you know Andy Cleaves (at 6-foot-2) can fly. He's had some highlight reel worthy slam dunks and alley-oops (with Ty Davis), but he can also jump and control rebounds. Cleaves put the rebounding skills on display last weekend as he led the team in boards both nights with nine each. He's now averaging 4.5 rebounds per game with a career-high of 11 on Jan. 20 at Cal State San marcos.
Almost Automatic
Vida Faniel made four more free throws last week to extend his current consecutive free throws made streak to 24. He had a streak of 21 straight made earlier this season. Faniel has only missed five free throws all year, hitting on 61 of 66 tries for 92.4 percentage (he's 38 for 42 on the line in CCAA games).
Handling the Rock
The Warriors have been able to limit their turnovers this season. They have turned the ball over just 286 times (11.9 per game) with a lower number than opponents 19 times.
Loss Late For the First Time
Saturday's loss to Humboldt State was the Warriors' first setback this season when they held a lead with less than five-minutes left to play. They allowed a season-high 59 points in one half of play against the Lumberjacks.
Playoff Picture
The Warriors can clinch a CCAA Tournament berth with a win this week. It would be the team's first since appearance in the postseason tournament since 2014-15. While having a play-in game on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at home is unlikely, but it's still possible. Stan State would likely have to win-out and get some help. The top four teams host a first round game on campus sites before the semifinals and finals at Cal Poly Pomona, March 2-3.
