Warriors face Chico State, Humboldt State during Homecoming Week

A week filled with festivities are on the docket as the Warriors host Chico State and Humboldt State during Homecoming, Alumni and Hall of Fame Week at Stanislaus State.

The Festivities
Stanislaus State and its Associated Students, Inc., are celebrating Homecoming Week as school spirit on campus is amp'd up. Week long events on campus lead into Thursday night's basketball doubleheader against rival Chico State inside Fitzpatrick Arena, where capacity crowds are expected. Saturday is Hall of Fame and Alumni day as Warrior Athletics welcomes its next induction class of the Hall of Fame. The Alumni Association is also hosting an alumni reception during that evening's doubleheader against Humboldt State.

Upsetting Ranked Team
Thursday's win over No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona was the Warriors' first over a ranked team since Feb. 20, 2016 when they beat No. 20 Cal Poly Pomona in Turlock … Prior to last week, Stan State had been 1-6 against ranked team since the 2013-14 season.

Homecoming Game Tid-Bits
This is the second consecutive season that the Warriors will face Chico State on Homecoming night … The Warriors have lost the last four homecome games … The last Stan State win on homecoming night was Feb. 15, 2013 — a 72-57 win over UC San Diego.

Better on the Road
The Warriors have guaranteed themselves a winning record on the road this regular season. They are 8-4 in "road games" with just two regular season games to go. They are also 1-0 in neutral site games. Only the 2013-14 team had more wins away from Turlock when they were 11-7 (including postseason tournament games).

Five Warriors in Double Figures, Again
Five Stan State Warriors scored in double digits in last Thursday's win over Cal Poly Pomona. It was the fourth time this season that at least five Warriors scored 10 or more points in a game (Jan. 27, vs. SF State; Dec. 18 vs. Seattle Pacific; Nov. 15 vs. Cal State San Bernardino) … Against Cal Poly Pomona, Andy Cleaves scored 16, Kyle Gouveia had 12, Kaelen Mitchell netted 11 with Ty Davis and Xavier Francois each with 10 points. These five accounted for all but three points in the game (Vida Faniel).

Mitchell Heating Back Up
Kaelen Mitchell has came all the way back from early-season injury. In the last three games, he tallied 42 points (14 ppg) on 16 of 31 shooting (.516). He was also 9 for 24 (.375) from the three-point arch … Prior to the Jan. 27 game against SF State, when he scored 18 points, he was averaging 6.4 points per game.

Winning Games Late
Stanislaus State has managed to hang on to leads late in the game and is now 12-0 in games they are ahead at the 5:00 left to play mark.

Almost Automatic
Vida Faniel
made two more free throws last week and has extended his current consecutive free throws made streak to 20. He had a streak of 21 straight made earlier this season. Faniel has only missed five free throws all year, hitting on 57 of 62 tries for 91.9 percentage (he's 34 for 38 on the line in CCAA games).

THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS

Chico State WILDCATS (16-5, 13-4 CCAA)

Series Notes: 
Chico State has won seven straight in the series including the Nov. 25 game in Chico. The Wildcats are now 26-17 against the Warriors during the CCAA era.

Last Time We Met... was on Nov. 25 in Chico with the 16th ranked Wildcats posting a 73-59 win. Andy Cleaves had 14 points, five rebounds and three steals for Stanislaus.

About the Wildcats: The Wildcats are the hottest team in the CCAA with a seven-game winning streak. During the streak, they have won by an average margin of 18.6 points per game, including a 38-point win over Humboldt State … Chico has the second best defense in the CCAA (63.9 ppg) … Corey Silverstrom averages 13.9 ppg.


Humboldt State LUMBERJACKS (8-15, 5-12 CCAA)

Series Notes: The Warriors won in Arcata for the second straight time earlier this season and are now 6-19 against Humboldt State since 2004.

Last Time We Met... was Dec. 7 in Arcata when Vida Faniel and Andy Cleaves each scored 16 points to lead the Warriors to a 67-62 win. Kyle Gouveia had 12 rebounds.

About the Lumberjacks: Humboldt State won both games at home last weekend to snapp a five-game losing streak … HSU has the third worst defense in CCAA games, allowing 76.0 ppg … The Jacks lead the conference with 37.9 rebounds per game … Kameron Curl averages 12.1 points per conference game.
